Earlier today, The Daily Mail reported that stage and screen star Carey Mulligan is eyeing a return to the West End in drector David Leveaux's planned revival of Patrick Marber's CLOSER - this afternoon, Leveaux assured it's not the case.
In the original report, the Daily Mail wrote that a source claimed that the in-demand actress had been offered "a lot of money" to join the production, with "advanced negotiations" currently underway. Mulligan and Leveaux previously worked together in 2011's THROUGH A GLASS DARKLY Off-Broadway.
Following the publication, Levaux spoke up on Twitter, replying to The Daily Mail: "Except it's not true.... Casting hasn't even begun on the show...And, I should add, though it's not true. We should be so lucky."
CLOSER chronicles the relationships of four characters: Dan, an obituary writer, Alice, a stripper, Anna, a photographer, and Larry, a dermatologist, and the complications that emerge when deceit, lies, and betrayal are discovered. The play won the Laurence Olivier Award for 'Best New Play' in 1998, and was adapted for the big-screen in 2004 by Mike Nichols, starring Julia Roberts, Jude Law, Clive Owen, and Natalie Portman.
Mulligan most recently starred in Baz Luhrmann's film adaptation of The Great Gatsby and will next appear in Inside Llewyn Davis and the upcoming Hold on to Me and Far from the Meddling Crowd. Her other film credits include Shame, Drive, Never Let Me Go, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, Brothers, Public Enemies, An Education and more. She has also appeared on TV in The Amazing Mrs. Pritchard and Bleak House.
Mulligan has starred on Broadway in The Seagull and off-Broadway in Through a Glass Darkly.
