Following previous reports that Jessica Chastain, Scarlett Johansson, Amanda Seyfried and Reese Witherspoon were among the actresses being considered for the part of Hilary Clinton in the upcoming biopic RODHAM, Carey Mulligan has been announced as the frontrunner for the role. Sources tell THR she is scheduled for a sit-down with director James Ponsoldt to discuss the possibility.
Rodham will follow the former First Lady, senator and Secretary of State's younger years, beginning in 1974 when Clinton worked as a lawyer. The film, penned by Young il-Kim, is expected to debut in 2016.
Mulligan stars in the currently playing Baz Luhrmann film adaptation of The Great Gatsby and will next appear in Inside Llewyn Davis and the upcoming Hold on to Me and Far from the Meddling Crowd. Her other film credits include Shame, Drive, Never Let Me Go, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, Brothers, Public Enemies, An Education and more. She has also appeared on TV in The Amazing Mrs. Pritchard and Bleak House.
Mulligan has starred on Broadway in The Seagull and off-Broadway in Through a Glass Darkly.
