The smash-hit suspense thriller Misery, starring two-time Emmy Award winner and Golden Globe Award winner Bruce Willis and three-time Emmy Award winner Laurie Metcalf, concludes its limited 16-week engagement today, Sunday, February 14, 2016 at the Broadhurst Theatre (235 W 44th Street). Below, BroadwayWorld brings you a look back at the show's thrilling Broadway run!
Written by two-time Academy Award winner William Goldman, directed by Will Frears and also featuring Leon Addison Brown, Misery began performances at Broadway's Broadhurst Theatre on Thursday, October 22 and officially opened on Sunday, November 15.
MISERY has scenic design by David Korins (Hamilton), costume design by Academy Award and Tony Award winner Ann Roth (The Book of Mormon), lighting design by David Weiner (The Normal Heart), sound design by Tony Award winner Darron L. West (Peter and the Starcatcher), and original music by Michael Friedman (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson). Misery is produced by Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures (Mark Kaufman), Castle Rock Entertainment (Martin Shafer, Liz Glotzer) and Raymond Wu.
William Goldman's film adaptation of Misery, based on Stephen King's celebrated novel, was directed by Rob Reiner and released in 1990, starring James Caan and Kathy Bates, who won an Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for her performance as Annie Wilkes.
MISERY made its world premiere at Bucks County Playhouse in 2012.
When MISERY's Broadway run was initially announced, Obie Award-winning stage and screen actress Elizabeth Marvel (OTHER DESERT CITIES) was tapped to take on the iconic role of super-fan Annie Wilkes. Due to scheduling conflicts with filming of Netflix's HOUSE OF CARDS, Marvel exited the production, with Metcalf named the eventual replacement.
