BWW Blog: Molly Garner of BIG FISH - Elephant Butts and Mermaid Tails

As I walked into rehearsal on Monday the sights of three elephant butts sticking out of a wall greeted me. "Welcome to Big Fish," they seemed to say. "It gets even crazier from here."

The non-union cast members had been rehearsing for a week already. The AEA members joined Monday. It was great to see a few familiar faces, including my New York friend Michelle Loucadoux, and Jeff Skowron, who shared a dressing room with my husband in 2006. The new people I met seem very friendly and not standoffish at all.

I'm continually amazed by the production elements of the show. I wish I had seen it on Broadway, but I was out of town for most of its run. The mermaid character, for example, executes her choreography on the edge of the stage from the orchestra pit, while a puppeteer controls her mermaid tail.

Ensemble member Rachel Davis is pretty in this show. She's very pretty. In fact, everyone in the cast is good-looking. We have one bonafide Vegas dancer: Annie Hinkston, who has the longest legs I've ever seen, and I've seen some long legs. And yes, you do expect to see stunning women in the ensemble, but even our music director is a young, sexy 30-something. Maybe I'm just extra-aware because my last job was Billy Elliot, a decidedly un-glamorous show. But regardless, I'm happy to be a part of this troupe of lovelies.
