Tonight before a crowd of 150 theatre makers and theatre lovers, theatreWashington announced the nominees for the 2015 Helen Hayes Awards. One of the country's most prestigious cultural honors, The Helen Hayes Awards recognizes and celebrates excellence in professional theatre throughout the Washington metropolitan area. Watch the full announcement below, and scroll down for the list of nominees!

The National Theatre's Helen Hayes Gallery set the scene for the announcement of nominees in 47 categories for artistic excellence, and the naming of the 2015 John Aniello Award for Outstanding Emerging Theatre Company. This year's Awards will mark the first results from new rules and guidelines that were implemented for the 2014 theatre season season and that roughly double the number of awards bestowed.

During the 2014 season, 50 theatres produced 188 productions that met eligibility requirements in the January 1 - December 31 judging cycle. These productions were seen by a pool of 47 Helen Hayes Awards Judges who submitted 26,183 scores for 2,435 pieces of work, 1,417 of which were acting performances alone. From these shows, 264 artists, ensembles and productions from 31 theatres were recognized with Helen Hayes Awards nominations.

Flying V was named the recipient of the John Aniello Award for Outstanding Emerging Theatre Company. An ensemble-based company dedicated to the development of vibrant original work and offbeat contemporary plays, Flying V draws its inspiration from genre fiction, comic books, and other modern mythologies.

For the first time, a group of the region's theatre notables was invited to reveal the list of nominees, including Thembi Duncan, producing artistic director for the African Continuum Theatre Company; James Konicek, actor; James Kronzer, award-winning set designer; Jojo Ruf, executive and creative director of The Welders and managing director of the Laboratory for Global Performance and Politics at Georgetown University; Kimberly Schraf, actor and co-director of the Honors Conservatory at the Theatre Lab; and Christopher Henley, former artistic director of WSC Avant Bard.
