Leigh Silverman, Violet, Best Direction of a Musical
I was with composer Jeanine Tesori, siting on her bed with her daughter and we were just clutching each other - after so many years of working on the show, to be recognized and appreciated is just a wonderful thing. I feel amazed and honored. I feel that Violet is really an important musical - I put my heart into it and it's about a girl who wants a miracle and the fact that the show is happening is a miracle and to be nominated is truly a penultimate miracle! I'm on my way to rehearsal now, I'm doing American Hero at Second Stage so I feel lucky and proud that I can celebrate by doing what I love to do - directing. But I plan to stop by the theater tonight to congratulate Sutton and Joshua and say 'yay'! I'm just so grateful and happy for this moment - I feel like there is nothing like this show right now.
