As BroadwayWorld sadly reported yesterday, Thomas Meehan, who is best known for his books of such classics as Annie, The Producers and Hairspray, has passed away at 88 years old.

Dance has long been perceived as an art entertainment for the wealthy, educated and performance trained. Terms such as 'fifth position,' 'adagio,' 'camber,' 'shag,' and 'pirouette' are foreign to most people. Dance styles such as hip hop, Tango, jazz, Samba, and Broadway may be terms that have been heard, but not known as a specific type of dance. This combination has made attending dance programs a 'no go' activity for many.

BIG FISH, a new musical based on the novel by Daniel Wallace and the 2003 Columbia Pictures film written by John August, will open Sunday, October 6, 2013, at Broadway's Neil Simon Theatre (250 West 52nd Street). Directed and choreographed by five-time Tony Award winner Susan Stroman (Contact, The Producers, The Scottsboro Boys), with music and lyrics by Grammy and Tony Award nominee Andrew Lippa (The Wild Party, The Addams Family), a book by Grammy and BAFTA Award nominee John August (Frankenweenie, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), Big Fish begins previews on Broadway Thursday, September 5, 2013. Osip Theatre presents Celebrity Night at Café Red, written and directed by Lily Bevan, at Trafalgar Studios 2, now through 6 October, 2012. Celebrity Night at Café Red is being co-produced by Osip Theatre and Lucy Pattison, with assistant direction from Hamish MacDougall, lighting design by Christopher Nairne, sound design by Emma Laxton, set design by Giuseppe Belli and costume design by Emma Belli. On Tuesday, September 7, LIMELIGHT: THE STORY OF CHARLIE Chaplin opened at the La Jolla's Mandell Weiss Theatre. The production, which has music and lyrics by Christopher Curtis and a book by Christopher Curtis and Thomas Meehan, runs through October 17, 2010. Falls' cast includes stage and screen stars Carla Gugino (Entourage, Spy Kids, Sin City) Pablo Schreiber (Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Awake and Sing!), Boris McGiver (The Wire) and Daniel Stewart Sherman (Broadway's Cyrano de Bergerac). The centerpiece production of Goodman Theatre's two-month 'A Global Exploration: Eugene O'Neill in the 21st Century,' Desire Under the Elms appears January 17 ? February 22 in the Goodman's 856-seat Albert Ivar Theatre. Tickets are $25 - 82.
