Civic Theatre of Allentown will produce the Pulitzer-winning musical 'Next to Normal,' which will run from May 3 to May 19. Civic's Artistic Director William Sanders directs this 'brave, breathtaking' (The New York Times) rock musical written by Brian Yorkey and lyrics by Tom Kitt. Featuring an electrifying pop-rock score of more than 30 songs, 'Next to Normal' is an intense, tender, human scale musical that aims straight for the heart. Photo Coverage: Meet the Cast of FAR FROM HEAVEN!

Playwrights Horizons will soon present the World Premiere production of Far From Heaven, the eagerly-awaited new musical with a book by Tony Award winner and two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist Richard Greenberg (Take Me Out, Three Days of Rain, the current Breakfast at Tiffany's and The Assembled Parties, both now on Broadway), music by Tony Award nominee Scott Frankel (Grey Gardens at PH and on Broadway, Finding Neverland) and lyrics by Tony Award nominee Michael Korie (Grey Gardens at PH and on Broadway, The Grapes of Wrath, Finding Neverland). The production is choreographed by Alex Sanchez(Giant, Fiorello!) and directed by three-time Tony Award nominee Michael Greif (Grey Gardens at PH and on Broadway; Rent, Next to Normal, Giant). The musical is based on the Focus Features/Vulcan Productions motion picture Far From Heaven, written and directed by Todd Haynes. MCC Theater presented its annual Miscast gala last night, March 4, 2013 at The Hammerstein Ballroom (311 West 34th Street). Miscast 2013 honored Tony Award winner Judith Light (Other Desert Cities) for her illustrious screen and stage career (appearing on Broadway this year for her third straight season, this time in Richard Greenberg's upcoming The Assembled Parties), her work with MCC Theater (acclaimed performances in Colder Than Here and Wit), and her impassioned advocacy of several causes, including Arts in Education. BWW Reviews: Well Done NEXT TO NORMAL @ Beck Center

There is a recent trend for Cleveland area professional theatres to couple with local university drama programs. Cleveland Play House has married itself to both Cleveland State University and Case Western Reserve's MFA programs. Cleveland Public Theatre and Oberlin College have such an agreement. The connection between Beck Center and Baldwin Wallace's nationally ranked musical theatre program, has resulted in not only allowing BW students to appear on a professional stage, and the expansion of the acting pool for Beck, but the production several top notch shows. If you were an investor in Broadway shows and someone came to you proposing a rock musical about a mother with worsening bipolar disorder, that was going to be performed as an operetta (all singing, few spoken sentences), with no show stoppers, no dancing, no chorus numbers, few laughs, and an unnerving ending, written by an author who has never had a big hit, would you invest? Well, a group did, and the result was NEXT TO NORMAL which won three 2009 Tony Awards and the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and had a smash 733 performance-run on Broadway, and is now touring to sold out audiences.
