Happy Birthday Ann Reinking! Reinking came to critical notice in 'Over Here!' (Theatre World Award), and later went on to originate roles in 'Goodtime Charley' (with Tony and Drama Desk nominations) and 'Bob Fosse's Dancin' (Tony nomination). She also took over leads in 'Chicago', 'A Chorus Line', and 'Sweet Charity'. She appeared in Fosse's semi-autobiographical film All That Jazz, as well as the films Annie and Micki and Maude. STAGE TUBE: On This Day 5/4- SWEET CHARITY

Today in 2005, the second Broadway revival of Sweet Charity opened at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, where it ran for 279 performances. Sweet Charity is a musical with music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by Dorothy Fields and book by Neil Simon. It was directed and choreographed for Broadway by Bob Fosse starring his wife and muse Gwen Verdon alongside John McMartin. The musical premiered on Broadway in 1966, where it was nominated for 12 Tony Awards, and also ran in the West End as well as having revivals and international productions. THe 2005 revival starred Christina Applegate in he title role. (more...)

Today in 1966, Sweet Charity opened at the Palace Theatre, where it ran for 608 performances. Featuring music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by Dorothy Fields and book by Neil Simon, the musical was directed and choreographed for Broadway by Bob Fosse starring his wife and muse Gwen Verdon. It is based on Federico Fellini's screenplay for Nights of Cabiria. STAGE TUBE: On This Day 1/13- Gwen Verdon

Today in 1925, the late Broadway legend Gwen Verdon was born. Verdon was an actress and dancer who won four Tony awards for her musical comedy performances. With flaming red hair and an endearing quaver in her voice, Verdon was a critically acclaimed dancer on Broadway in the 1950s and 1960s. She is also strongly identified with her second husband, director-choreographer Bob Fosse, remembered as the dancer-collaborator-muse for whom he choreographed much of his work and as the guardian of his legacy after his death. Verdon is most remembered for starring in Sweet Charity, Chicago, and Damn Yankees. (more...)

STAGE TUBE: On This Day 12/31 - Bebe Neuwirth

Today in 1958, Tony Award-winner Bebe Neuwirth was born. Neuwirth made her Broadway debut in the role of Sheila in A Chorus Line in 1980. She later appeared in revivals of Little Me (1982) Sweet Charity (1986), for which she won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, and Damn Yankees (1994). 1996 saw her play the role of Velma Kelly in the Broadway revival of Chicago. That role brought her her greatest stage recognition to date, and several awards including the Tony Award, Drama Desk Award and Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical. Neuwirth would later return to the still-running revival of Chicago in 2006, this time in the role of Roxie Hart. (more...)

Omaha's Broadway dreams will come true for the second consecutive summer when The Broadway Dreams Foundation (BDF) partners with Omaha Performing Arts to present their acclaimed Summer Performing Arts Intensive Monday, June 11 through Sunday, June 17, 2011 at the Holland Performing Arts Center (1200 Douglas Street, Omaha, NE). Acclaimed theatrical director and producer Richard Jay-Alexander and a roster of Broadway veterans will work with aspiring young performers from the Omaha area throughout the week in preparation for 'True Colors,' a one of a kind Broadway concert open to the public. STAGE TUBE: Ann Reinking Educates About Marfan Syndrome Through Dance

'The one good thing about dance is that if you are truly yourself, then it's all good,' Ann Reinking said recently in an ABC News interview. This goes especially for the dancers that she teaches these days, who have been diagnosed with Marfans Syndrome. As for those who Reinking choreographs, she seems as inspired by them as they are by her. 'The human spirit is the greatest thing on earth,' she says of her experiences.
