Helmed by original director Jack O'Brien and original choreographer Jerry Mitchell, the new non-Equity national tour of  HAIRSPRAY is visiting more than 60 cities in its first touring season and is expected to play for multiple seasons.

On this day in 2002, the big. beautiful Broadway hit musical, Hairspray opened at the Neil Simon Theater.

This week Theater Talk welcomes back two all-time favorite guests, composer/lyricist Marc Shaiman and lyricist Scott Wittman whose new show Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has just opened on Broadway. Along with them was Tony-winning director Jack O'Brien, making his first appearance on our show. The trio whose collaboration on Hairspray won them all Tony Awards and massive acclaim in 2002, have returned to Broadway with this stage adaptation of Roald Dahl's classic 1964 children's book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The musical also includes an infusion of some key songs from the 1971 film of the story, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. In addition to some snappy conversation between them, Shaiman performs several of his compositions for the new show and a delightful time is had by all.

Tony Award winner Marissa Jaret Winokur teased that she may be returning to Baltimore for a cameo appearance in NBC's HAIRSPRAY LIVE!

Opening the night was celebrity contestant Kim Fields and her partner Sasha Farber who danced a Jive to 'You Can't Stop The Beat' from HAIRSPRAY.

The HAIRSPRAY UK tour is currently playing at Cambridge Corn Exchange, through February 20, and will soon move on to Edinburgh Playhouse. Below, watch as the cast performed a rousing 'I Know Where I've Been.'

Today in 2002, Hairspray opened at the Neil Simon Theatre, where it ran for 2642 performances. Hairspray is a musical with music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman and a book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, based on the 1988 John Waters film Hairspray. In 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, plump teenager Tracy Turnblad's dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight. She then launches a campaign to integrate the show. Hairspray is a social commentary on the injustices of parts of American society in the 1960s.

Happy Birthday, Harvey Fierstein! In addition to Torch Song Trilogy, La Cage aux Folles and A Catered Affair, Fierstein's Broadway acting credits include playing the mother, Edna Turnblad in Hairspray (2002), for which he won a Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical. He later replaced Alfred Molina as Tevye in the 2004 revival of Fiddler on the Roof. Fierstein returned to the theatre when he toured as Tevye, replacing Chaim Topol in Fiddler on the Roof starting in December 2009. On February 15, 2011, he replaced Douglas Hodge as Albin/Zaza in the Broadway revival of La Cage aux Folles playing opposite Christopher Sieber. He is nominated for a 2012 Tony Award for the book of Newsies.

CATCH ME IF YOU CAN, based on the book and hit 2002 DreamWorks film of the same name directed by Stephen Spielberg with screenplay by Jeff Nathanson and book by Frank Abagnale, Jr., opened on Sunday, April 10 at the Neil Simon Theatre. It was two Edna's for the price of one on the British television show 'Never Mind the Buzzcocks' this weekend as Michael Ball and Phil Jupitus shared in the spirit of HAIRSPRAY and performed a bit of 'You Can't Stop the Beat'.

The German cast of HAIRSPRAY appeared on the TV Show 'Wetten, Daas...?' on December 5, 2009 to celebrate the opening of the new production. The show is currently booked through 31 March 2010 at the Musical Dome in Cologne, Germany.

The Broadway Workshop, Manhattan's fastest growing acting program for young artists, welcomed 'Hairspray' film star Nikki Blonsky to their list of guest artists who participated in it's 'CAMP NYC' program. 'CAMP NYC' took place in New York City August 17-21.

Nigel Planer and Verity Rushworth joined the cast of Hairspray the musical as Penny Pingleton and Wilbur Turnblad.
