Edward Albee was an American playwright known for his darkly comedic and often controversial works. Born on March 12, 1928, in Washington, D.C., Albee was adopted as an infant by Reed and Frances Albee, a wealthy couple who owned vaudeville theaters. He was raised in Westchester County, New York, and attended a number of private schools before being expelled from one for academic reasons.

Tony Mordente began his career as a dancer after studying at the High School of Performing Arts and the American Ballet Theater School. Choreographer Michael Kidd cast him as Lonesome Polecat in the Broadway musical *Li'l Abner* (1956). He went on to appear in both the Broadway (1957) and West End productions of *West Side Story*, playing A-Rab on stage, and later appeared in the film adaptation *West Side Story* (1961) as Action. He also provided the voice for the single “Oliver Cool” (1961).
