1st IRISH 2011 Hands out Top Prizes at Closing Party

Deirdre Kinahan's 'Bogboy' won three major awards, including best production, at the closing ceremonies of the fourth annual 1st Irish Festival, on Monday October 3, at Papillon Bistro & Bar, 22 East 54th Street. The haunting drama about a heroin addict's unlikely friendship with a reclusive farmer also scored for Sorcha Fox who won best actress and Jo Mangan who was named best director. But it was 'A Night with George,' a comedy from Belfast, that proved to be the audience darling, snapping up the award for Best Play in online voting. The award for Best Play was presented by the actor Gabriel Byrne, Ireland's cultural ambassador. (more...)

Immediate Medium Presents THE FUTURE AT THE END OF THE WORLD, 12/10-12

To celebrate the conjunction of its 10th anniversary and the "end" of the Mayan calendar, Immediate Medium is creating an immersive, interdisciplinary group performance called The Future at the End of the World. Working with guest curator Andrew Horwitz, Immediate Medium has selected nine makers of dance, theater, performance, music and media to join them in the largely abandoned offices of the James A. June Spoon and Phillip Fork host Pass the Spoon, a vibrant cookery show/opera mashup by David Shrigley, David Fennessy and Nicholas Bone. Mr Granules is coming to dinner, and the presenters must impress him with a Special Menu. Everything seems to be going to plan, but when the chops burn and Mr Granules starts to get angry, June and Phillip are tested to their admittedly rather unimpressive limits. (more...)
