Julie Taymor to be Honored at the 2013 Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art First Awards at Brooklyn Museum

Award-winning theatre, opera, and film director Julie Taymor will be honored at the 2013 Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art First Awards at the Brooklyn Museum on June 13 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The award, which honors women who have broken gender barriers to make remarkable contributions in their fields, will be bestowed on Taymor, winner of the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical in 1998. It will be presented by Museum Trustee Elizabeth A. Sackler and followed by a conversation between Taymor and feminist icon Gloria Steinem. (more...)

The title characters are the children of Adam and Eve. The play is a comedy, written and directed by Serge Ernandez. The production features an adept cast headed by Obie-winner Sheila Dabney as Eve, who also directs the play's chorus. Ernandez is a veteran of The Living Theatre; Dabney is a senior member of La MaMa's Great Jones Rep. La MaMa E.T.C. will present the play's premiere run January 18 to 27 in its second-floor Club. Those who have kept up with the press surrounding one of the holiday season's biggest movies, Les Miserables, know how much emphasis was put on the fact that it was the first time that a movie musical had used live singing. In a recent interview with Charlie Rose, however, Julie Taymor claims that the cast of Across the Universe did the very same thing back in 2007. (more...)

Though no official cancellation notice has gone up on the NYT Arts & Leisure Weekend's web site for a scheduled conversation on January 8th between Patrick Healy of the Times and currently troubled SPIDER-MAN director Julie Taymor, ticket buyers are telling us that they received a refund notice yesterday and the event is no longer on sale, marked as cancelled on the ticket sales web site.
