Kat Ramsburg to Star in 5th Avenue Theatre's HAIRSPRAY; Full Cast Announced!

The 5th Avenue Theatre has announced complete casting for Hairspray in Concert, featuring some of Seattle's favorite musical theatre stars and the powerful voices of the 250-member Seattle Men's Chorus. Celebrating the 10th anniversary of Hairspray's 2002 Broadway debut, this unique concert event will play for six very special performances of glorious and irreverent John Waters-inspired wackiness (Friday-Sunday, June 20-23). In 2002, Hairspray was The 5th Avenue Theatre's first world premiere musical to head for Broadway where it won the 2003 Tony Award for Best Musical and launched The 5th's unprecedented track record for sending new works to New York. Now the smash hit musical comes home, as audiences have never seen it before. (more...)

The Unbleached American tells the story of Ernest Hogan, the 'father of ragtime' and the first African American to perform on Broadway. Beloved by his fans and wealthy beyond his wildest dreams, Hogan was also an infamous writer of 'coon songs' that many considered offensive to his own race. BWW Reviews: Sam Bass Presents Family Friendly Double Header with SECRET GARDEN and YELLOW BOAT

While it does have a few areas that could improve and may be a long night for the kids, Sam Bass's double header of The Secret Garden and The Yellow Boat is overall an enjoyable evening of theatre that will entertain and enchant the kids while moving the adults to tears. (more...)

Rebecca Luker to Star in THE LITTLE DANCER at the Kennedy Center, Oct 2014?

Rebecca Luker announced on the Tonys red carpet tonight: 'I'll be doing THE LITTLE DANCER musical at The Kennedy Center in about a year and a half.' According to the AP, the show is inspired by a Degas sculpture called 'Little Dancer Aged Fourteen', and features book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, with music by Stephen Flaherty and direction and choreography by Susan Stroman. BWW Reviews: SECRET GARDEN at St. Edwards University is Haunting and Beautiful

The last few times I've seen a production at St. Edwards University's Mary Moody Northern Theatre, I've had to remind myself that I'm viewing a show featuring a cast of mostly college students. Every time, the production is of professional quality, and their current production of The Secret Garden is no exception. All audience members are bound to be mesmerized by the physical beauty of the stagecraft and the incredible performances. (more...)

KINKY BOOTS to Launch US Tour in September 2014 from Vegas; MATILDA Tour Still Undecided

As it does every year, ticket sales are up all around on Broadway as a result of the Sunday night's Tony Awards, with advance ticket sales for Best Musical winner Kinky Boots up to $10 million and up to $21 million for fellow nominee Matilda. According to the New York Times, Kinky Boots will launch a national tour from Las Vegas in September 2014, while Matilda producers have yet to decide whether the British import will tour the US. Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Mayor's Office of Media & Entertainment Commissioner Katherine Oliver today presented the eighth annual 'Made in NY' Awards, honoring individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the City's entertainment and digital media industries. The 2013 'Made in NY' honorees include: Tony and Olivier Award-winning actor Alan Cumming; 'Project Runway' host and executive producer Heidi Klum; two time Oscar-nominated director Spike Lee; five time Tony Award-winning singer and actress Audra McDonald; President of HBO Documentary Films Sheila Nevins; NYC-based blogging platform and social networking website Tumblr; and Harvey and Bob Weinstein, founders of The Weinstein Company and Miramax Films. This year's 'Made in NY' Mayor's Award for Lifetime Achievement was presented to Emmy Award-winning television host and broadcast journalist Barbara Walters.
