Desert Rose Playhouse to Present Mart Crowley's THE BOYS IN THE BAND 4/5-5/5

The Desert Rose Playhouse, the Valley's live stage company serving the LGBT community, will present Mart Crowley's classic play 'The Boys in the Band', at The Commissary in Rancho Mirage. The show will open April 5, 2013 for a five-week run closing on May 5. It's Harold's birthday and his friends are throwing him a party he'll never forget, complete with his surprise gift --- a street hustler named Cowboy. As the evening progresses, many drinks are swilled and a game of Truth goes terribly wrong. (more...)

Transport Group to Present THE MEMORY SHOW, Starring Leslie Kritzer and Catherine Cox, Beginning 4/16

Transport Group, the Drama Desk and OBIE award-winning theatre company, has announced that the New York premiere of a new musical, The Memory Show, book and lyrics by Sara Cooper; music by Zach Redler; directed by Joe Calarco, will begin performances Tuesday, April 16, at 7pm at The Duke on 42nd Street, a New 42nd Street project, at 229 West 42nd Street. The Memory Show features Catherine Cox and Leslie Kritzer. Opening night is scheduled for Tuesday, April 30 at 7pm. (more...)

"CLARENCE DARROW TONIGHT!", starring renowned actor and Emmy Award winner, Laurence Luckinbill, is set to be the first presentation in Coyote StageWorks' new free community outreach series, "Play Dates". Luckinbill, who has written and performed in a number of solo plays about such notables as Lyndon Johnson, Teddy Roosevelt and Ernest Hemingway, will read CLARENCE DARROW TONIGHT! at the Annenberg Theater on Sunday, March 10, 2013 at 2pm. The Country Playhouse will present The Boys in the Band by Mart Crowley, in the Cerwinske Stage for three weekends only, January 11 - 26. Performances are on Fridays and Todays at 8:00 p.m., with a Sunday matinee on January 20 at 2:00 p.m., plus a weeknight show on Thursday, January 24, at 7:30 p.m. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Country Playhouse's THE BOYS IN THE BAND - Surprisingly Relevant, Great Retro Show

As the nation faces an new civil rights battle, homosexuality is a topic that many have opinions about. Country Playhouse is taking audiences back to an era before the Stonewall Riots and before the AIDS epidemic, showcasing the struggles that afflicted homosexuals in the 1960s. As 2013 opens, Country Playhouse is producing Mart Crowley's seminal and classic 1968 play The Boys in the Band. The play is set in an Upper East Side apartment in Manhattan, and in a very WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRIGINA WOOLF style, reminds or introduces audiences to a time when the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders included homosexuality in addition to the self-loathing and lack of self-confidence experienced among the homosexual community in that period. Leanne Jones to Lead West End's SAUCY JACK AND THE SPACE VIXENS at Leicester Square, Aug 1-Sept 15

Multi award-winning West End star, Leanne Jones, is to head the cast of cult sci-fi musical Saucy Jack and the Space Vixens, which is returning to London for a seven-week summer season at Leicester Square Theatre from Thursday August 1 to Sunday 15 September.
