Stephen Sondheim has written songs for many crazy people in his musicals, some permanently so, and some pushed beyond their limits by circumstances who become temporarily that way. Sondheim's music is often exceptionally difficult and a classically trained trio, Blake Parham and Tahlia Ries, accompanied by Joshua Mollart on keyboard, is an ideal combination to do his work justice. Michael Aaron Lindner & Summer Naomi Smart to Lead Chicago Shakespeare Theater's SHREK Shrek; Full Cast Announced!

Chicago Shakespeare Theater (CST) announced today the acting company and creative team for Shrek The Musical, the Theater's annual summer family musical, directed and choreographed by Rachel Rockwell with music direction by Michael Mahler, July 13-September 1, 2013 in CST's Courtyard Theater. Based on the Academy Award-winning DreamWorks film and the book by William Steig, CST's 75-minute production ofShrek The Musical will take audiences on an unconventional fairy-tale adventure with everyone's favorite ogre. The production features two Jeff Award-winning actors: Michael Aaron Lindner as the lovable ogre Shrek and Summer Naomi Smart in her CST debut as the spunky Princess Fiona. In support of Mayor Emanuel's Summer of Learning Program, special activities will be offered in conjunction with Shrek The Musical for students to earn a "Bard Badge." (more...)

Cameron Mackintosh to Bring OLIVER! Back to Broadway

Today, Michael Riedel reports that in addition to upcoming productions of MISS SAIGON, BARNUM and a Broadway return of LES MIS that 'As if three shows weren't enough, Mackintosh is also planning a Broadway revival of "Oliver!" Lionel Bart's chirpy old musical hasn't been seen in New York since a short-lived 1983 production starring Patti LuPone. It's said to be Mackintosh's favorite musical, and it's how he got his start in the theater. "Oliver!" played the New Theatre in London in 1960, and a teenage Mackintosh got a job polishing the brass railing in the theater lobby.' (more...)

Official: Josh Gad & Santino Fontana to Join Idina Menzel & Kristen Bell in Disney's FROZEN

Walt Disney Animation Studios (WDAS) has tapped a trio of talented actors to join the voice cast in 'Frozen.' Josh Gad ('The Internship,' 'Love & Other Drugs,' Broadway's 'The Book of Mormon') provides the voice of Olaf the snowman; Santino Fontana (Broadway's 'Cinderella,' 'Brighton Beach Memoirs,' 'Billy Elliot') lends his vocal talents as Hans; and Alan Tudyk ('42,' 'Wreck-It Ralph,' ABC's 'Suburgatory') joins the film as the voice of the Duke of Weselton. Lincoln Center Announces 2013-14 Shows; Ethan Hawke in MACBETH, Laurie Metcalf in DOMESTICATED & James Lapine-Helmed ACT ONE

Lincoln Center Theater has announced four productions to be produced in the Vivian Beaumont and Mitzi E. Newhouse Theaters during the 2013-2014 season: the world premiere ofDomesticated, a new play by Bruce Norris, featuring Laurie Metcalf, directed by Anna D. Shapiro beginning performances Thursday, October 10 in the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater; a new production of Shakespeare's Macbeth, featuring Ethan Hawke in the title role, directed by Jack O'Brien, beginning performances Thursday, October 24 in the Vivian Beaumont Theater; Act One, adapted and directed by James Lapine from the autobiography by Moss Hart, beginning performances Thursday, March 20 in the Beaumont; and the world premiere of The City of Conversation, a new play by Anthony Giardina, directed by Doug Hughes, beginning performances Thursday, April 10 in the Newhouse. In addition to these four productions, LCT3, Lincoln Center Theater's initiative to produce the work of new artists and to engage new audiences, will produce a season of three plays, to be announced, in the Claire Tow Theater.
