by Christi Esterle - May 9, 2013

Starting today, the Fine Arts Center is delivering a love letter to musical comedy with The Drowsy Chaperone, a show the New York Times praised as 'a revved-up spoof of a 1920s song-and-dance frolic.' At a recent dress rehearsal I was able to sit down with several members of the cast and crew, beginning with Scott RC Levy, director of the Fine Arts Center who is making his Colorado acting debut as Man in Chair, the character guides the audience through the cast recording of the titular Jazz Age musical. by Nancy Grossman - May 16, 2013

Maurice Hines puts his passion for tap, his late brother Gregory, and classic Big Band music on display in TAPPIN' THRU LIFE: AN EVENING WITH MAURICE HINES. Backed by the Berklee College of Music Select Big Band, under the direction of drummer Sherrie Maricle, Hines tells his story, shows off his vocal chops, and delights the audience with his warm, relaxed presence. The program is stingy with his dancing, but The Manzari Brothers ratchet up the excitement and kick up a lot of dust in their turn in the spotlight. (more...)

Tony Award-winning stage and screen star Betty Buckley---who has been called 'The Voice of Broadway'---will be headlining a series of concerts as part of Segerstrom Center for the Arts' Cabaret Series from May 16 - 18 at the Samueli Theater. Called 'Ah, Men! Molly Dykeman to Bring THE F*CKING WORLD ACCORDING TO MOLLY to IRT Theater, 5/25-6/1
by BWW News Desk - May 13, 2013

Molly 'Equality' Dykeman is a loveable, but barely lucid security guard at PS 339 who dabbles in a bit of poetry, a bit of Percocet and a lot of drink. She may be a foul mouthed, straight talking, lady kissing, mother lover, but she still needs to find a way to pull herself together, overcome bed bugs, love and sissy kids to perform in her first poetry show. Will she succeed? Only Molly can tell... (more...)

BWW Reviews: IN THE HEIGHTS at Toby's - Energetic But Inaudible
by Jack L. B. Gohn - May 12, 2013

In The Heights is not standard Maryland dinner theater fare, concerning, as it does, the residents of a largely Dominican and Puerto Rican barrio at the northern end (and highest part) of Manhattan. The lyrics are often in Spanish, often delivered in rap monologue, and largely assume a kind of cultural literacy not common among Maryland dinner theater patrons: knowing, for instance, what it means for someone to say she comes from La Vibora or from Vega Alta (things I had to look up after the fact) or what kind of comestible a mamey might be (ditto), or what it means to yell 'Wepa!' (ditto again). This is probably a good thing; all of us should constantly be looking to broaden our horizons, especially in our theatergoing. At the same time, as much help as possible should be extended to make the proceedings as comprehensible as possible for us Anglo newbies. And sadly, barring a half-page insert of explanation in the program, that kind of help was in scant evidence in Toby's new production. (more...)
