Chicago's Lady Arm Wrestlers Return for CLLAW 16, 6/7

The ladies of CLLAW are celebrating their "Sweet 16" - but there's nothing sweet about these gals! The Chicago League of Lady Arm Wrestlers are flexing their forearms once again at CLLAW XVI on Friday, June 7 at 10 pm with a return to the super colossal Logan Square Auditorium, 2539 N. Kedzie Ave. in Chicago. Brought to you by Sideshow Theatre Company, CLLAW's 16th match will feature fearsome lady arm wrestlers decked out in over-the-top outfits, a cash bar, shady referees and audience participation all wrapped into one wild, crazy, theatrical event. Chicago bands The Black Laces and The Lucky Shiners will take the stage to rock out the evening. All proceeds from CLLAW XVI will benefit Sideshow Theatre and this match's partner charity, C4 - Community Counseling Centers of Chicago. (more...)

Coney Island 'SIDESHOW' Relics, Freak Show Memorabilia in NYC Exhibition & Sale, Now thru 5/25

While the golden era of New York's most beloved amusement park is long gone, relics of Coney Island's colorful history and photos of its amazing cast of performers grab the spotlight in 'Sideshow,' an exhibition and sale running today, May 2-25 at The Ross Art Group's Manhattan gallery. Sideshow's featured collection belongs to Dr. Robert M. Lerch, a New York City physician and longtime collector of the bizarre and unusual. The exhibition chronicles roughly the first 50 years of Coney Island whose first enclosed amusement park area opened in 1895 with additional pieces from other early 20th-century carnivals and circuses. MAGIC AT CONEY!!! - VAUDEVILLE REVISITED Set for Coney Island, 5/11

Over 100 years ago, Coney Island was the Mecca of magicians, comedians and artists from around the world. The local Sideshows at Dreamland, Luna Park and Steeplechase Park, as well as the dance halls and theaters were a proving ground for those performing artists looking to hone their skills. There were usually a dozen or more acts in every vaudeville performance. The performances ranged from the truly talented to the simply quirky. Aside from the magicians, there were musicians, such as the piano player Eubie Blake, and the child star, Baby Rose Marie. There were great acts of physical talent, everything from contortionists, to tumblers to dancers. Actors performed plays and jugglers juggled. (more...)
