'Empanada for a Dream' takes its title from the delicacies that Juan Francisco Villa's mother made that were legendary throughout his Lower East Side neighborhood while he was growing up: Empanadas so good that he would trade all his Batman and X-Men comics for them. Charles Weidman - Who?

Since December 28th was my birthday I looked around for something interesting to write about. And I did. But it happened on December 27, the same day Show Boat opened. But Show Boat opened in 1927 and this one in 1944. It was a musical titled Sing Out Sweet Land. What? Yes, I know that no one remembers it, let alone hearing about it), but after looking at some very impressive credits I saw that Charles Weidman had choreographed the production. (more...)

Restaurateur Elaine Kaufman Dies at 81

Famous restaurateur Elaine Kaufman died today, December 3, at Lenox Hill Hospital at the age of 81. Kaufman's iconic restaurant 'Elaine's' attracted a following among prominent actors and other celebrities. According to a representative for her restaurant, she suffered 'complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder and pulmonary hypertension.' (more...)
