Chicago Opera Theater Announces 2014 Season

Chicago Opera Theater (COT) General Director Andreas Mitisek today announces programming for COT's 2014 season, including two operas and a double-bill of one-acts. Mitisek comments, "It's a season that is 100% 20th century and 150% COT. New, rare and with contemporary relevance for a curious audience that is hungry for new theatrical experiences." The season opens with the Chicago Premiere of Duke Ellington's Queenie Pie, February 15 - 23, 2014. In the spring, COT presents a double-bill of Carl Orff's Die Kluge and Viktor Ullmann's Der Kaiser von Atlantis, May 31 - June 8, 2014. The season wraps in the fall with the Chicago Premiere of Ernest Bloch's Macbeth, September 13 - 21, 2014. Mitisek also comments "We increased our subscriber family by 18.5% in 2013. COT is THE place for adventure and discovery. We invite our audience on a journey into the good and evil of ambition." (more...)

The 8th Annual Charlotte Shakespeare Festival Kicks Off 5/30

The Charlotte Shakespeare Festival returns for an 8th year beginning May 30. The 2013 festival will feature full-length productions of Taming of the Shrew and Macbeth, a pre-show performance series and educational workshops for young people. All performances and workshops are free, but donations are encouraged ($5 minimum suggested). Advance donors can reserve seats. (more...)

Christopher Plummer, Barbara Byrne and More Join Guthrie's 50th Anniversary Gala, 6/22

The Guthrie today announced that eight artists who have graced the Guthrie's stages during its 50-year history, from the first season in 1963 to the theater's current season, are slated to participate in the Guthrie's 50th anniversary on June 22, 2013. Exclusive interviews with the legendary Zoe Caldwell and Christopher Plummer will be unveiled as part of a poignant and celebratory multi-media tribute, while stage veterans Barbara Bryne, Peter Michael Goetz and Stephen Yoakam; two graduates of the University of Minnesota/Guthrie Theater B.F.A. Actor Training Program, Matthew Amendt and Valeri Mudek; and an alum of A Guthrie Experience for Actors in Training, Erik Heger; will perform live for the one-night-only event. (more...)

Met Opera to Stream 'NICO MUHLY, TWO BOYS, AND OTHER WORKS' Live from Le Poisson Rouge, 5/14

The Metropolitan Opera announced that 'An Evening with Nico Muhly, Two Boys, and other works' will be available for live video streaming on both NPR Music (www.npr.org/music) and WQXR's Q2 Music online contemporary classical station (www.wqxr.org/q2music) this Tuesday, May 14, beginning at 10 p.m. The concert, which takes place at Le Poisson Rouge, is curated by Muhly, who will appear as host and performer. Metropolitan Opera singers Jennifer Zetlan and Paul Appleby will be joined by the composer on piano. Muhly will also perform selections for piano and viola with featured artist Nadia Sirota, his frequent collaborator. Special guests will include violin duo Angela and Jennifer Chun. (more...)

INDUSTRY INSIGHT: Weekly Grosses Analysis - 5/13; PIPPIN and BETTE Break Records

Two record breakers this week, I'LL EAT YOU LAST, Bette Midler's return to Broadway, has broken the box office record at the Booth Theatre. The production grossed $865,144 for the week ending May 12, 2013. This marks the second consecutive week the production has set the box office record at the Booth. The production's previous record of $753,217 was set the week ending May 5, 2013. Also, the new Broadway production of PIPPIN has broken the house record for the Music Box Theatre (239 West 45th Street) grossing $861,513 over eight performances for the week ending May 12, 2013. We Players to Stage Shakespeare's MACBETH Under Golden Gate Bridge, 8/30-10/6

We Players, in partnership with the National Park Service/ Golden Gate National Recreation Area will present a site-integrated production of Shakespeare's Macbeth at Fort Point, the civil war era fortress located beneath the Golden Gate bridge.
