InDepth InterView: Rob Morrow & Robert D. Wachs Discuss New Paul Jabara Disco Musical LAST DANCE & More

Today we are focusing a super-special spotlight on one of the Fall's most intriguing musical entries trying out in New York, the York Theatre Company's lab mounting of the new Paul Jabara jukebox musical LAST DANCE, by talking to the show's lead, recognizable TV and film star Rob Morrow, and the show's lead producer, noted comedic shepherd and filmmaker Robert D. Wachs, whom filled me in on all aspects of the show in a comprehensive chat late last week just prior to this week's start of rehearsals. In this all-encompassing conversation, Morrow, Wachs and I discuss the genesis of the new disco-themed musical celebrating the life and career of Jabara, the accomplished Emmy, Grammy and Academy Award-winning composer of Broadway shows (RACHAEL LILY ROSENBLOOM… AND DON'T YOU EVER FORGET IT), movie songs ("Last Dance" from THANK GOD IT'S FRIDAY; the titular "The Main Event") and numerous pop/rock/disco hits, such as "It's Raining Men" by The Weather Girls, Barbra Streisand and Donna Summer's epic disco duet "Enough Is Enough (No More Tears)" and his many solo hits, as well as the finer points of the story, concept, casting and the ultimate goals of the new Philip William McKinley-directed production, which features a book by Shaun McKenna. Additionally, Morrow and Wachs each generously share showbiz tales from their storied careers involving such big names as Eddie Murphy, Michael Bennett, Jonathan Larson, Tony Scott and many more and both copiously convey their infectious enthusiasm for the forthcoming fully-produced lab presentation of the new musical that will play for five performances beginning September 20 as they prepare for its first viewing before a paying audience. Haven Theatre Opens HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH, 7/5

Haven Theatre Chicago will present the company's inaugural production, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, July 5 - August 11, at Theater Wit, 1229 W. Belmont Ave. Hedwig and the Angry Inch, written by John Cameron Mitchell, with lyrics and music by Stephen Trask is directed by Kyle Trent with music direction by Kory Danielson. The newly formed Haven Theatre strives to conserve, renew and reinvent theatre traditions while providing ongoing support and mentorship to emerging artists. The performance schedule is Fridays and Saturdays at 10:30 p.m. and Sundays at 6 p.m. Preview performances areFriday, July 5 and Saturday, July 6 at 10:30 p.m. and Sunday, July 7 at 6 p.m. Opening night is Monday, July 8 at 7:30 p.m. Preview performance tickets are $20 and the all other tickets prices are $32. Duke Ellington Center For The Arts Presents YES! THE MUSICAL, 3/5

The first public presentation of Wilson's new show, called YES! THE MUSICAL, will be given a single showcase salon performance on Monday, March 5, at 8 PM -- one year and one day later from the day he started it -- at the Rose Nagelberg Theater at the Baruch Performing Arts Center on 25th Street, just east of Lexington Avenue. The production, with book, music and lyrics by Wilson, is being presented by The Theater at the Duke Ellington Center For The Arts, with Mercedes Ellington as director- choreographer. (more...)

Forslund Announces Open-Ended Run for LET MY PEOPLE COME Revival at Underground Theatre

John Forslund & Forslund Theatricals LLC, producers of the first NYC revival of the legendary musical Let My People Come: A Sexual Party Musical Revue, are announcing the extension of the sold-out, eight-week limited engagement hit on the Upper West Side! Previews began February 8 with the official opening on February 14. Performances will continue every Friday at 8pm at the new Underground Theatre, 955 West End Avenue at W. 107th and Broadway.
