Mahler's 5th Symphony, JEANNE D'ARC AU BUCHER and More Set for OSM's 79th Season

Back from its seven-concert tour in South America, the Orchestre symphonique de Montreal will be playing Mahler's Fifth Symphony in May under the direction of conductor David Zinman. For the Mahler concert, the OSM will also be hosting pianist Stephen Kovacevich in Mozart's Concerto No. 18, K. 456, 'Paradis.' The Orchestra will wind up its 79th season with a performance of Honegger's grand-scale oratorio Jeanne d'Arc au bucher (Joan of Arc at the Stake)with Carole Bouquet and Guy Nadon under Kent Nagano. Artistic Director Les Waters and Managing Director Jennifer Bielstein have announced O Guru Guru Guru, or why I don't want to go to yoga class with you by Mallery Avidon, directed by former Actors Theatre directing intern Lila Neugebauer. The play will run in the Victor Jory Theatre beginning on March 20, opening March 22 and running through April 7th. The production is part of the 37th Humana Festival of New American Plays, made possible by a generous grant from the Humana Foundation. (more...)

Shizuo Z. Kuwahara conducts Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra on Saturday, April 6 at 11 a.m. at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. Bedlam's SAINT JOAN Revival Returns Off-Broadway at Access Theater Tonight

Access Theater presents a 4-week encore engagement of Bedlam's critically acclaimed Off-Broadway revival of George Bernard Shaw's rarely produced 1923 masterpiece SAINT JOAN. In this bold, environmental staging directed by Eric Tucker, Shaw's play is performed in its entirety using an ensemble of only four actors to play all 24 roles. Performances begin tonight, March 6 at Access Theater where it will play in repertory with a new production of HAMLET as performed by the same four actors. (more...)

Chicago Opera Theatre Announces THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER & More for 2013

Andreas Mitisek announced today Chicago Opera Theater's (COT) 2013 Season, his first as General Director. The season opens in February of 2013 with the Chicago Premiere of Philip Glass' The Fall of the House of Usher, followed by Ástor Piazzolla's Maria de Buenos Aires in April, and concluding in September with another Chicago Premiere, Giuseppe Verdi's Joan of Arc (Giovanna d'Arco). These three new productions will be presented at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance in Millennium Park. (more...)

Pig Iron Theatre to Team with Dr. Dog for Concert-Spectacle, Spring 2014

The OBIE Award-winning Pig Iron Theatre Company will collaborate on a new concert-spectacle with Dr. Dog - the Philadelphia-based indie-rock band whose last album (Be the Void) debuted on Billboard's top 50 - thanks to new funding from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The as-yet-untitled collaboration, scheduled for spring/summer 2014, will filter Dr. Dog's songs (including some from a new album due out in October) through Pig Iron's unique visual style and concept-driven staging. Six performances for Walden will be held at the Robert Moss Theatre, 440 Lafayette Street, NYC from May 29-June 15 as part of The Planet Connections Theatre Festivity.
