GMHC Presents A PART OF OUR WORLD: Honoring the Life and Lyrics of Howard Ashman, 6/3by BWW News Desk - May 24, 2013On Monday, June 3, 2013, over a dozen Broadway performers will honor the life and lyrics of Howard Ashman at a concert for AIDS Walk New York, benefiting GMHC and 40 other AIDS service organizations in the tri-state area. Hosted at the Laurie Beechman Theatre at the West Bank Cafe, the concert will feature songs with lyrics written by Ashman throughout his career, from his Oscar-winning work in Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid, to lesser known gems from Smile and songs originally written for Aladdin. WICKED Breaks Records in South Bendby BWW News Desk - May 22, 2013From May 8th thru the 19th, WICKED bewitched more than 36,000 patrons at The Morris Theatre, broke box office records with a record gross of $2.7 million dollars and became South Bend's most successful touring Broadway Show. Shakespeare on the Sound to Stage AS YOU LIKE IT, 6/13-30by BWW News Desk - May 22, 2013Connecticut's premier outdoor Shakespeare will present As You Like It, June 13-30, 2013. The show is one of Shakespeare's most beloved and pastoral comedies. Claire Shannon Kelly, currently the Director of Youth Programming for Shakespeare on the Sound and the director of the company's touring educational program, 'Speaking Daggers,' will direct. Kelly previously worked at the Ordway Theater, the Guthrie Theater, the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey and the George Street Playhouse. She is a resident of New Canaan. (more...)
Photo Flash: PEEPSHOW's Surprise Onstage Proposalby BWW News Desk - May 21, 2013Audience members were treated to a wonderful surprise as they were on-hand to witness the first onstage marriage proposal at PEEPSHOW at Planet Hollywood on May 18. Ensemble cast member Sophia Monica, who performs the "Teddy" number in Vegas' only striptease spectacular, in addition to filling in for the "Bo Peep" role when headliner Coco is out of the show, was caught off guard as her long-time partner and father of her son, Etienne Carreira bent down on one knee and proposed to her onstage in front of the PEEPSHOW cast and audience. Carreira is a professional break dancer and is also a trained dancer. To celebrate, Sophia also did an impromptu back flip (in heels) at the end, which made the audience go crazy with joy and excitement. Congrats to the newly engaged couple! (more...)
