BWW Reviews: IN THE HEIGHTS at Toby's - Energetic But Inaudible
by Jack L. B. Gohn - May 12, 2013

In The Heights is not standard Maryland dinner theater fare, concerning, as it does, the residents of a largely Dominican and Puerto Rican barrio at the northern end (and highest part) of Manhattan. The lyrics are often in Spanish, often delivered in rap monologue, and largely assume a kind of cultural literacy not common among Maryland dinner theater patrons: knowing, for instance, what it means for someone to say she comes from La Vibora or from Vega Alta (things I had to look up after the fact) or what kind of comestible a mamey might be (ditto), or what it means to yell 'Wepa!' (ditto again). This is probably a good thing; all of us should constantly be looking to broaden our horizons, especially in our theatergoing. At the same time, as much help as possible should be extended to make the proceedings as comprehensible as possible for us Anglo newbies. And sadly, barring a half-page insert of explanation in the program, that kind of help was in scant evidence in Toby's new production. (more...)

BWW Interviews: Seth Glier and His Music Inspires at SXSW
by Kathy Strain - Mar 22, 2013

I was a middle child. My brother's older and autistic; and then my younger sister. So being a middle child I sang to get my parents' attention. I old hop up on the table and sing Ricky Martin 'Shake Your Bonbons.' It was sort of a call out and I loved singing. I wasn't even good. I was just loud. After September 11 was when I started writing songs. I changed for me the direction of what I wanted to do with the songs and the world I wanted them to live in. I was 13. Then I started gigging when I was 14 or 15. I would go and play my set and have to leave immediately because I was under 21. I didn't really start touring full-time until I dropped out of Berklee College of Music that's when I was like, 'Well, I need to do this for real. ' I think one of the things I'm lucky to have is the sheer lack of a back- up plan. So when things weren't working, it wasn't about doing something else to supplement it, it was about making it work. And it's been working so far. (more...)

InDepth InterView: Jeremy Jordan Talks NY Pops THE WIZARD & I Schwartz Gala, SMASH, LAST FIVE YEARS Film, NEWSIES & More
by Pat Cerasaro - Apr 6, 2013

Last week I had the distinct pleasure of speaking with Broadway headliner and SMASH Season Two Breakout star Jeremy Jordan about a wide range of topics, covering the vast majority of his career thus far in anticipation of the upcoming New York Pops Stephen Schwartz concert event, THE WIZARD & I: THE MUSICAL JOURNEY OF STEPHEN SCHWARTZ, on April 12 at Carnegie Hall. So, today, in this all-encompassing conversation, Jordan and I discuss his preparation for the sure-to-be sensational Schwartz event and provides analysis and ideas on the songs he will be performing as well as Schwartz's oeuvre in general. Also, Schwartz reveals a plethora of information about Season Two of NBC's musical drama series SMASH and what we can expect from the series over the next several weeks as the drama heats up and HIT LIST hits the stage. Also, Jordan reveals preliminary information about the forthcoming feature film adaptation of Jason Robert Brown's celebrated Off Broadway musical THE LAST FIVE YEARS, co-starring fellow Broadway/Hollywood crossover Anna Kendrick, and he shares some initial impressions of the project, as well as new details about what we can expect from the highly anticipated Richard LaGravenese-directed movie musical that is set to start shooting in June. Additionally, Jordan reflects upon his time playing Tony in WEST SIDE STORY under the direction of Arthur Laurents, in addition to remarking upon roles he would enjoy pursuing in the future, near and far, as well as much, much more! BWW Reviews: Relevant and Masterful CABARET at PlayMakers Rep
by Larisa Mount - Apr 13, 2013

PlayMakers Repertory Company in Chapel Hill is currently staging a production of Kander and Ebb's 1967 Tony Award-winning best musical Cabaret that is racy, dazzling, and thought-provoking. Starting and ending on two very different trains, and set largely in the Kit Kat Klub nightclub and in a boarding house, Cabaret features many characters of uncertain goals, ambiguous sexuality, and real heart, who are, whether they are willing to admit it or not, facing real danger with the rise of the Nazi Party looming. Though perhaps existing on society's fringe, the show is a real testament to the average German and their inability (or even refusal) to believe that something truly terrible could be brewing in their own nation. Interestingly enough, the story is largely told through the story of a Brit, Sally Bowles (played to perfection by Lisa Brescia), and an American, her lover Cliff Bradshaw (the undeniably charming John Dreher), as they provide a sort of outsider's perspective on how people reacted to the decline of Weimar Germany and the rise of Nazism. Hosted by the club's Emcee, played by Taylor Mac, the show goes from glitzy dance numbers to heartfelt ballads and back again as it navigates through one of the most tenuous times in the history of the Western world.
