BWW Reviews: Raleigh Natives Shine in NC Theatre's THE DROWSY CHAPERONE

It's an old-fashioned musical - with a twist. NC Theatre's current production is the 2006 Broadway musical, The Drowsy Chaperone, subtitled, 'A Musical Within a Comedy.' The show's premise is that the narrator, named simply Man in Chair, guides the audience through his favorite show album (on vinyl, of course), the fictitious 1928 The Drowsy Chaperone. In a tongue-in-cheek look at the musical comedies of Broadway in the 1920s, the Man in Chair provides modern-day commentary on the things that make such shows at once laughable and wonderful. The show-within-the-show tells of a star, Janet Van Der Graaff, about to give up life on stage for marriage. Of course, no classic musical would be complete without its own off-the-wall subplots. The Drowsy Chaperone includes everything from a spit-take obsessed butler/hostess pair to pun-loving Gangsters disguised as bakers, as well as Van Der Graaff's chaperone who has her own romantic entanglements with the hopelessly clumsy Adolfo. The premise is what makes this show work - the modern-day lens creates a show which is accessible without sacrificing on humor. (more...)

Guys and Dolls, subtitled "A Musical Fable of Broadway" is set in the colorful world of New York City in the mid 20th century. It is considered one of the greatest musicals of all time. Guys and Dolls is populated with Gangsters and gamblers, missionary dolls and beautiful showgirls, and has one of the greatest musical scores in the history of American theatre. LATINOS BEYOND REEL Screening and Discussion Set for Moving Image Today

As part of its ongoing series Changing the Picture, sponsored by Time Warner, Inc., Museum of the Moving Image will present the documentary film Latinos Beyond Reel: Challenging a Media Stereotype followed by a town-hall discussion about the role of Latinos in the media and the obstacles they face in representation within mainstream culture. The program, today, April 28, at 5:30 p.m., will feature appearances by Miguel Picker, co-director of Latinos Beyond Reel; actress Liza Colon-Zayas (Law and Order: SVU, Louie); actor Tony Plana (Ugly Betty, Three Amigos, Resurrection Blvd.); Maria Agui Carter, Chair, National Association of Latino Independent Producers; and will be moderated by Museum trustee Warrington Hudlin. Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts Presents STREET FAIR, 4/27

Get ready PIFA 2013 lovers - the Street Fair is back! As with the inaugural Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts in 2011, the finale of PIFA 2013 brings artistry and family fun full circle, in the day-long outdoor experience known as the PIFA STREET FAIR. The culminating event of the 31-day festival takes place Saturday, April 27th, 2013, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Kimmel Center will once again close Broad Street from Chestnut to South Street for a traditional Street Fair - a throwback to a carnivalesque atmosphere with interactive family fun festivities, fantastical and unique street performers, visual excitement, attractions and music for all ages with no gate charge.
