Mezzo Tara Erraught Honored by Bavarian Government for Contribution to the Arts

In just a little over two years, Irish mezzo-soprano Tara Erraught has made the transition from young singer to an emerging artist whose talent has captured the attention of the international opera public. Since February 2011, when as a member of the distinguished Bavarian State Opera (Bayerische Staatsoper) she won widespread international acclaim in the title role of a new production of Ravel's L'Enfant et les Sortileges and, in the same month, jumped in for an ailing colleague on five days notice to perform Romeo in a new production of Bellini's I Capuleti e i Montecchi, Ms. Erraught has been one to watch. The latest recognition of her work comes from the Bavarian Government which has bestowed upon her the prestigious Pro meritis scientiae et litterarum, given annually since 2000 in recognition for outstanding contribution to science and the arts. At 26 years of age, she is only the fifth musician to receive this honor since the award's inception, and the youngest so honored. (more...)

Destination America & USA Weekend Announce RED, WHITE AND YOU Contest Winners

Destination America, the only television network that celebrates the people, places, and stories of the U.S., and national weekly magazine USA WEEKEND announce the winners of their first-ever RED, WHITE AND YOU contest, which awards two deserving communities a spectacular Fourth of July celebration. And the winners are... Union Beach, NJ, a coastal town still recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, and Fayetteville, NC, a major military community forced to cancel its annual Fireworks display at Fort Bragg due to budget cuts. Launched in March, the contest asked folks across the country to put their patriotism on display to prove why their respective towns were most deserving of an over-the-top Independence Day party. Kristen Hertzenberg Set for 4TH WITH THE PHIL in Las Vegas, 7/4

The Las Vegas Philharmonic will bring back and expand upon a beloved tradition in July when it presents a new Independence Day celebration called 4th with the Phil at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts. The celebration on Thursday, July 4th will include a family fun day held in Symphony Park from 4PM, a Pops concert held in Reynolds Hall at 7:30PM and a Fireworks display at 9PM over the park, located in downtown Las Vegas. It will be the first Fourth of July concert in three years for the orchestra and marks its 15th birthday. Tickets go on sale on Monday, May 13th. (more...)

BWW Reviews: John Cranko's ONEGIN at American Ballet Theatre

John Cranko's Onegin was recently presented by American Ballet Theatre. As I expected, the reviews weren't great. It seems Cranko never commands much respect over here. The reviews all describe the work in the same way: empty, boring, sleep-inducing. But I don't agree. Sure, the ballet could be shortened, but aren't there many ballets like that. One thing it does offer: wonderful acting parts for dancers. (more...)
