Maestro Hans Graf to Bid Farewell to Houston Symphony, 5/17-18

Maestro Hans Graf will conduct the Houston Symphony in his final concerts as Music Director on May 17 and 18. Ending his 12-year tenure, Graf will celebrate with the orchestra, staff and patrons in a grand performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 2, Resurrection. Joining the orchestra will be guest soloists Erin Wall, Bernarda Fink and the Houston Symphony Chorus under the direction of Charles Hausmann. The evening is sure to be one of bittersweet goodbyes and beautiful melodies for all who attend. Graf will return to conduct two concerts during the Symphony's 2013-14 Centennial Season as Conductor Laureate. (more...)

Ari Pelto Joins Opera Colorado as Artistic Advisor

Opera Colorado announced today that it has appointed conductor Ari Pelto as Artistic Advisor. Pelto's role will commence with the Company's 2014 season, working hand-in-hand with General Director Greg Carpenter and conducting one opera per season beginning in the fall of 2014. Pelto made his Opera Colorado debut earlier this year, conducting the company's highly-acclaimed production of Mozart's Don Giovanni in March 2013. Known for presenting contemporary and rarely performed works as well as more traditional productions of classic opera repertoire, Opera Colorado is the preeminent grand opera company in the Rocky Mountain region and a vital presence in Denver's cultural ecology. Classic Stage Company, under the leadership of Artistic Director Brian Kulick and Executive Director Greg Reiner, presents Bertolt Brecht's THE CAUCASIAN CHALK CIRCLE featuring Christopher Lloyd (Azdak), directed by Brian Kulick (who directed Brecht's Galileo last season), and featuring new music by Tony Award-winning singer/songwriter Duncan Sheik (Spring Awakening). Tara Erraught Announces 2013-14 Touring Season in Germany, Austria and More

Few emerging artists have captured the attention of the international opera public as the Irish-born mezzo-soprano Tara Erraught. A member of the Bayerische Staatsoper, she won widespread acclaim in February 2011, first in the title role of a new production of Ravel'sL'Enfant et les Sortileges and, in the same month, jumping in for an ailing colleague on five-days notice to perform Romeo in a new production of Bellini's I Capuleti e i Montecchi. Nicolas Horvath Releases FRANZ LISZT Christus Album

French pianist Nicolas Horvath is heard in his recording debut with this fascinating solo piano version of Liszt's monumental oratorio Christus. This world premiere recording retraces the Life of Christ via a series of musical frescoes in which the composer seemingly runs through the entire history of music — from Gregorian chant through Romantic virtuosity to avant-garde expressionism. “I could not begin my recording career with anything better than a world premiere by Liszt,” Horvath told Piano Bleu, “I have admired the music and the life of Franz Liszt for so many years: his large generosity of spirit, a limitless curiosity … his music was a mirror of his time.” The new recording from Editions Hortus is available from Allegro Classical on May 14. Stephen Costello to Sing in Met Opera's Summer Recital Series; Heads to San Fran and UK

Richard Tucker Award-winning tenor Stephen Costello looks forward to singing opera arias and duets al fresco on both sides of the Atlantic this summer, with appearances in New York's Metropolitan Opera Summer Recital Series (July 16 & 19); with the San Francisco Opera Orchestra at the city's Stern Grove Festival (Aug 18); and at the inaugural Branscombe Festival on England's south-west coast (July 27). In both California and the UK, the tenor's partner will be his wife and frequent co-star, lyric soprano Ailyn Pérez; recently billed as 'opera's hottest couple' at Los Angeles Opera, Vanity Fair says they are 'a match made in verismo heaven.'
