CINDERELLA, MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR, and CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF Set for African-American Shakespeare Company 2012-13 Season

San Francisco’s African-American Shakespeare Company has announced the lineup for its 18th season. The season marks African-American Shakespeare Company’s third season under the artistic leadership of acclaimed actor and director L. Peter Callender. The season opens in December with an enchanting holiday production of CINDERELLA; this new take on the timeless fairytale has become a seasonal favorite for families and children of all ages. The season continues in March with William Shakespeare’s quintessential comedy MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR. Closing the season in April is Tennessee Williams’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Cat on A Hot Tin Roof. Productions will be staged at the Buriel Clay Theater at the African American Art & Culture Complex in San Francisco. Subscriptions for the 2012-13 season go on sale May 12. (more...)

MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET Plays Toronto Centre for the Arts, 7/10-29

On December 4, 1956, an auspicious twist of fate brought Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley together. The place was Sun Records' storefront studio in Memphis. The man who made it happen was Sam Phillips, the "Father of Rock 'n' Roll," who discovered them all. The four young musicians united for the only time in their careers for an impromptu recording that has come to be known as one of the greatest rock 'n' roll jam sessions of all time. (more...)

The Old Globe’s 2012-13 Season will feature the World Premieres of two new musicals: Allegiance – A New American Musical by Jay Kuo and Lorenzo Thione and A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder by Robert L. Freedman and Steven Lutvak. The season also includes George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion in celebration of the classic play’s 100th anniversary and the World Premiere of a new adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House by Anne-Charlotte Hanes Harvey and Kirsten Brandt. Two recent Broadway hits will make their San Diego debuts at the Globe: David Lindsay-Abaire’s Good People and Jon Robin Baitz’s Other Desert Cities. A Streetcar Named Desire today announced that it will offer a limited number of student rush tickets for $29.50. Tickets will be available at the box office on the day of the performance, and each current student ID is eligible for two tickets. The Guthrie Theater today announced complete casting for the sparkling new musical Roman Holiday. This song-filled delight—based on the iconic 1953 Paramount Pictures film starring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck—includes timeless music and lyrics by Cole Porter and a book by Paul Blake. The production will play from June 9 – August 19 on the McGuire Proscenium Stage and features soul-stirring Porter standards like “Easy to Love,” “Just One of Those Things” and “Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye.” Guthrie Associate Artistic Director John Miller-Stephany (1776, God of Carnage and A Streetcar Named Desire) will direct.
