BWW Reviews: Broadway Vet Shoshana Bean Sings Final Free Concert at Americana at Brand, 6/2by Michael L. Quintos - May 31, 2013What happens when you cram together the star quality of Barbra, the riffs of Beyonce, Whitney, and Mariah, the sass of Stevie, and the deep, emotional soul of Aretha? You get Broadway star and old-school soul revivalist Shoshana Bean. A gifted powerhouse vocalist, Ms. Bean is one of those entertainers you just have to listen to live on a stage. When she sings, it's not just a performance---it's a full-bodied experience. Bean will perform one final free outdoor concert at the Americana at Brand on Sunday, June 2, from 3-6pm. (more...)
BWW Blog: Kelly McCormick of PTC's LES MIS - Hiking in the Wasatch Mountainsby Guest Blogger: Kelly McCormick - May 31, 2013As I've mentioned in previous blogs, hiking in the Wasatch Mountains is absolutely spectacular. So spectacular, in fact, I've been known to get impatient with the trail I'm on and just scramble up a steep incline as if I'm a mountain goat (all the while, I hear my dad's voice in my head saying, 'THIS IS NOT SAFE.'). Sorry, Dad. It's so worth it when you're greeted at the top of a peak with a field of wild daisies with hummingbirds dashing from bloom to bloom and the world stretched out before you. Of course, no amount of your own stretching afterward will get rid of the week of muscle pain that follows such an impulsive hillside dash. . . but I digress. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Max & Louie Productions' Splendid MRS. MANNERLYby Chris Gibson - May 29, 2013There's something about playwright Jeffrey Hatcher's writing style that I can connect with. Maybe it's the fact that he peppers his dialog with so many references to 1960's era television fare that I can't help but be drawn back to my own childhood. Sure, I spent a lot of time outdoors, but there were certain prime hours of the day when the re-runs on the local independent channels were not to be missed (not by me,anyway). Now, I never wanted to or had the desire to ever attend a manners class, but as we can see By the Way most humans behave these days, maybe it wouldn't be a bad thing if everyone did. Max & Louie Productions has put together a wonderful staging of Hatcher's MRS. MANNERLY, which takes a humorous look at a that point in our past when etiquette somehow became antiquated, and it's a superbly performed and directed presentation that shouldn't be missed. (more...)

SOUND OFF: BEHIND THE CANDELABRA Strikes A Real Chordby Pat Cerasaro - May 27, 2013Packed with a plethora of talent heading the cast - Michael Douglas, Matt Damon, Debbie Reynolds, Rob Lowe, Scott Bakula, Cheyenne Jackson and Dan Aykroyd - and supposedly the final feature film from Academy Award-winning auteur Steven Soderbergh, HBO's BEHIND THE CANDELABRA is a shimmering, glittering Hope Diamond of a musical biopic - and, also, an all-too-befitting final film to feature musical arrangements by the late, great Marvin Hamlish. BWW Reviews: OC's 3D Theatricals Presents Extraordinary Revival of PARADEby Michael L. Quintos - May 26, 2013One of the most stunning, brilliantly-staged productions I've seen in the past few years, Orange County's 3D Theatricals has, once again, outdone itself with its moving, epic-sized revival of Jason Robert Brown's Tony Award-winning musical PARADE. Now playing a limited engagement through May 26 at the Plummer Auditorium in Fullerton, this triumphant, emotionally-resonant, Broadway-caliber presentation directed by 3DT's co-founder and artistic director TJ Dawson ranks as, arguably, the best musical this relatively young regional theater company has produced thus far. BWW Reviews: Hilarious, Campy PRISCILLA Musical Sashays into L.A.by Michael L. Quintos - Jun 7, 2013Hilarious, visually arresting, and surprisingly heart-warming, PRISCILLA - QUEEN OF THE DESERT---the rousing stage musical adaptation of the 1994 Oscar-winning indie film of the same name---is an outlandishly silly show from start to finish, filled with non-stop eye-popping visuals, out-of-this-world costumes, playfully cheeky adult banter, and a smile-inducing songbook crammed with familiar, decade-defining pop hits. Though a show about drag queens may not necessarily be everyone's cup of tea, open-minded theatergoers seeking to experience a fun, non-serious, genuinely entertaining spectacle will truly enjoy this musical comedy's first national tour production now playing a limited engagement at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood through June 16.
