BWW Reviews: SCR Presents Dagger-Sharp BECKY SHAW

A great many wrong things can happen on a blind date, especially one between a couple of people that are such complete polar opposites of each other. But what happens when said blind date is not just an awful one... but, really, the worst blind date ever? Such is the premise of Gina Gionfriddo's engrossingly funny play BECKY SHAW, which recently had its West Coast premiere at South Coast Repertory and continues there through November 21. This off-Broadway hit-a recent nominee for the Pulitzer Prize-tells the story of one such blind date that is so awful and so doomed from the start that it actually sets off this chain reaction of searing arguments, intense revelations, and jaw-dropping events that forever alters the lives of everyone in the periphery. Make no mistake, though. This is one seriously hilarious play-but not for the reasons you may think. (more...)

BECKY SHAW to Play Round House Theatre, 5/29-6/23

Round House Theatre concludes its 2013 Bethesda season with the area premiere of Becky Shaw, which runs May 29 thru June 23. Patricia McGregor makes her Round House directing debut with this comedy by Gina Gionfriddo, which was an Off-Broadway smash hit as well as aPulitzer Prize finalist. Review - Becky Shaw: All's (Vanity) Fair

It's such a shame that Second Stage's crackling production of Becky Shaw, Gina Gionfriddo's comedy of ill manners, is scheduled to close on February 1st. I can't think of a better Valentine's Day entertainment for cynically single urbanites looking to combat the champagne and roses splendor with which the coupled celebrate February 14th than this acidic portrait of the down and dirty business of allowing oneself to be emotionally available. Populated with smart, articulate characters who say clever things while living sad little lives, a night at Becky Shaw can do wonders for the self-esteem of the lonely hearted looking to both be entertained by and feel superior to those in or looking for love.
