by BWW - May 1, 2012

"I feel pretty damn good! I'm exhausted because it's six in the morning here in LA, but it still feels pretty damn good! My phone started buzzing and I ran to my computer because I wasn't sure. So, I ran to my computer and because we're in this housing, first you have to enter your log in information and I couldn't get it to work. I'm like 'Why now?!" I finally got it to work and it was only after a friend sent me a text saying 'CONGRATULATIONS' that I thought 'Thank God!' I'm in tech right now so I'll spend the rest of the day in tech until midnight, but for this I'll do it!" (more...)

BWW Reviews: Brian Stokes Mitchell is a Class Act at the Broad
by Don Grigware - Mar 13, 2012

On Friday March 9 and Sunday March 11, debonair Broadway tenor Brian Stokes Mitchell graced the stage of the Broad in Santa Monica for an intimate concert of standard tunes and Broadway favorites. Called by some critics the last Broadway leading man, Mitchell, or Stokes, as he prefers to be called, is handsome and possesses an astoundingly rich vocal instrument, but it is his warm, up-close charismatic approach to the material that is most winning. He makes you feel like you are at home with him, his wife and eight year-old son, as he shares some of his favorite tunes and embarrassing moments onstage. There's the time when he was performing Kiss Me Kate on Broadway and forgot the lyrics to "Where Is the Life That Late I Led". He looked down into the orchestra pit for assistance from musical director Paul Gemignani, who looked back at him and shrugged. Stokes proceeded in our presence to essay the number reading the lyrics from a tiny notebook which he pulled from the breast pocket of his suit jacket. It is this type of small human touch that characterizes the man and makes him vulnerable and totally likeable. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Hershey Felder's Lincoln is a Class Act at Pasadena Playhouse
by Don Grigware - Apr 3, 2012

Hershey Felder has proven himself a virtuoso musician at the piano over the last fifteen years portraying Chopin, Beethoven, Bernstein and Gershwin, among others, and now with his original composition Lincoln for symphony orchestra and actor, he proves just how well he can sing and tell a story...without stepping one foot toward the piano. Playing Charles Augustus Leale, a Union army surgeon who attended the fallen Abraham Lincoln on August 14, 1865 at Ford's Theatre, D.C., he guides us into a privately experienced world of loss and grief that soon affected an entire nation... that would have to let go of the brilliant politician/statesman, who cared so dearly for his people. In fact, the strong parallel between Leale and Lincoln is that they both cared tirelessly for the human condition. Now on stage at the Pasadena Playhouse through April 7 only, Felder's Lincoln - An American Story is a beautifully written and heartfelt narrative to which every American should bear witness. (more...)
