Based on the play Les Romanesques by Edmond Rostand
Nevada Conservatory Theatre presents the classic musical, The Fantasticks, featuring music by Harvey Schmidt, with lyrics by Tom Jones.
Two neighboring fathers put up a wall between their houses to ensure that their children fall in love, because they know children always do what their parents forbid. After the children do fall in love, they discover their fathers' plot and they each go off and experience things in the world. They return to each other and the love they had, having learned from the world.
THE FANTASTICKS is an endearing, romantic family musical about a boy, a girl, two fathers and a wall. Loosely based on the play The Romancers (Les Romanesques) by Edmond Rostand, the musical follows two neighboring fathers who trick their children, Luisa and Matt, into falling in love by pretending to feud. Set in a world of moonlight and magic, this classic musical teaches us about life, love, and the lessons learned along the way. Written in 1960 by Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones, the show's original Off-Broadway production ran a total of 42 years and 17,162 performances, making it the world's longest-running musical.

There are many reasons why THE FANTASTICKS original off-Broadway production ran a total of 42 years and 17,162 performances, making it the world's longest-running musical which continues to enchant audiences around the world. Aside from it being a 'Romeo and Juliet' type story we can all relate to, but with a much happier ending, its most well-known song, 'Try to Remember,' speaks to everyone wanting to go back to a time in our lives when all things were much more simple, romantic, and totally carefree.

The Gateway Playhouse closes out an amazing and busy Summer season with a superb production of the musical Little Shop Of Horrors. This incarnation runs at the Bellport venue through September 9th boasting an outstanding Broadway caliber cast. Based on the classic 1960 film, book writer Howard Ashman pens - and writes the lyrics for - the theatre staple's heartfelt story. And Alan Menken's music is a fun fusion of 1960s rock and roll, doo-wop and Motown. You'll more than likely be familiar with the score's popular tunes including the title song and 'Suddenly, Seymour'.
Sometimes even the loveliest and most appealing of musical theater scores can be forgotten, virtually erased from your memory. Unless, of course, you have your digital music system programmed to play a cavalcade of memorable showtunes, but even then, you're likely hear songs from the same ten shows on a continuous loop.
It's not every day you can re-use the opening from a July 1972 newspaper article for an article in 2017. But here goes:
A scene from a 1960 musical is causing outrage in 2017. The musical is The Fantasticks, and the scene has to do with a dated and offensive portrayal of Native Americans. Earlier this month, a group of Native American high school students, taking part in a summer program aiming to welcome Native Americans to college life, walked out of the University of Wyoming production.

How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying tells the story of J. Pierrepont Finch and his rise to the top of the corporate ladder with the aid of a simple self-help book. Along the way, he learns how to find your name on the executive door and win the secretary's heart quicker than you can say "nepotism." I had an absolutely wonderful conversation with the show's director and the organization's artistic director Thea Kano about her background and why this production is so important.
