What did our critic think of GUYS AND DOLLS at Theatre Memphis?

The iconic musical will make its return to Marietta at the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre from August 25-September 4 for the start of its 42nd season. Guys and Dolls tells the classic story of big-city gamblers and a bet with an outcome no one expected.

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has just announced initial casting for its Broadway Center Stage production of Guys and Dolls. Helmed by Marc Bruni, the all-star cast will be led by Tony winner James Monroe Iglehart as Nathan Detroit, Tony winner Jessie Mueller as Miss Adelaide, Steven Pasquale as Sky Masterson, and Tony and Grammy winner Phillipa Soo as Sarah Brown.

Set in Damon Runyon’s mythical New York City, Guys and Dolls is an oddball romantic comedy. Gambler, Nathan Detroit, tries to find the cash to set up the biggest craps game in town while the authorities breathe down his neck; meanwhile, his girlfriend and nightclub performer, Adelaide, laments that they’ve been engaged for fourteen years. Nathan turns to fellow gambler, Sky Masterson, for the dough, and Sky ends up chasing the straight-laced missionary, Sarah Brown, as a result. Guys and Dolls takes us from the heart of Times Square to the cafes of Havana, Cuba, and even into the sewers of New York City, but eventually everyone ends up right where they belong. The classic Broadway musical Guys & Dolls is set to be revived in London next year in an immersive production from Tony and Olivier Award-winning director, Nicholas Hytner.

Theatrical licensor Music Theatre International (MTI) announced the celebration of its 70th anniversary. Officially recognized on May 29th, the date former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg declared “Music Theatre International Day” in 2012, MTI is celebrating this milestone throughout the next year by showcasing the incredible talents of theatrical organizations around the world.

ACT (A Contemporary Theatre) of Connecticut has announced their 2022-2023 line up of shows. The season will mark the theater's fifth season and will include the Golden-Age classic comedy GUYS AND DOLLS, the smash hit jukebox musical ROCK OF AGES, and the breathtaking Tony Award winning THE SECRET GARDEN!

The Pulitzer Prize Board has just announced that Fat Ham has won the 2022 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Other finalists included: Selling Kabul, and Kristina Wong, Sweatshop Overlord.

As luck would have it for this lady, I had the privilege to review GUYS & DOLLS at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia Sunday, April 24, and let me tell you, hearing those performers sing was well worth the three-hour drive. The Musical Theatre program at SAU is thriving, and the future of those actors is bright!

Sky Masterson, Nathan Detroit, Sarah Brown, and of course Miss Adelaide… these names are often familiar to Broadway aficionados of all ages. Guys and Dolls, the third joint production to be presented by MNM Theatre Company, the City of Lauderhill, and North End Theater Company will bring these iconic characters (along with Nicely Nicely Johnson, Harry the Horse, Angie the Ox, and others) to life on the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center (LPAC) stage from April 1st through April 16th. 

The comedy focuses on the relationship between young, wild Toni and her older, married lover Julian, a dentist. Convinced the two have no future together, Toni attempts suicide, and a guilt-ridden Julian rashly proposes he leave his wife so the couple can be together. However, Julian has never revealed to Toni that his 'marriage' is actually an elaborate lie concocted to keep Toni at arm's length. Toni refuses to break up his household without first meeting and talking with Julian's soon-to-be-ex, so Julian enlists the aid of his shy spinster assistant Stephanie to pose as his non-existent wife. Complications arise when Toni decides the two must find her a new beau so everyone concerned can live happily ever after. Take a trip back to the groovy 60s! Winner of the 1950 Tony Award for Best Musical, Guys and Dolls is one of the first musicals about the actual street called Broadway as New York City's vital thoroughfare, not the theatrical Broadway of kick-lines and curtain calls. This is the first time Guys & Dolls has not been produced at the Alhambra Theatre and Dining since owner Craig Smith took over the venerable theater in 2009.
