BIO
Sam Gold began directing Off-Broadway with The Black Eyed at New York Theatre Workshop in 2007, followed by productions including Rag and Bone (2007), Circle Mirror Transformation (2009–2010), The Aliens (2010), Dusk Rings a Bell (2010), Tigers Be Still (2010), and The Coward (2010). In 2011, he directed Kin, August: Osage County, A Doll’s House, and We Live Here. His later Off-Broadway directing credits include Look Back in Anger (2012), The Big Meal (2012), Uncle Vanya (2012), The Flick (2013), Fun Home (2013), The Village Bike (2014), The Mystery of Love and Sex (2015), John (2015), Othello (2016–2017), Hamlet (2017), The Secret Life of Bees (2019), Corsicana (2022), and Angry Alan (2025).
Gold directed several Broadway productions beginning with Seminar (2011–2012). He later directed Picnic (2012–2013), The Realistic Joneses (2014), The Real Thing (2014–2015), Fun Home (2015–2016), The Glass Menagerie (2017), A Doll’s House, Part 2 (2017), King Lear (2019), Macbeth (2022), An Enemy of the People (2024), and Romeo + Juliet (2024–2025). His productions have featured actors including Alan Rickman, Toni Collette, Tracy Letts, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Ewan McGregor, Sally Field, Laurie Metcalf, Glenda Jackson, Daniel Craig, Ruth Negga, Rachel Zegler, and Kit Connor.
He has frequently collaborated with playwright Annie Baker, directing Circle Mirror Transformation (2009), The Aliens (2010), Uncle Vanya (2012), The Flick (2013), and John (2015). He also directed the West End premiere of The Flick at London’s Royal National Theatre in 2015 and directed Fun Home at the Young Vic in 2018.
Gold won the Obie Award for Direction in 2010 for Circle Mirror Transformation, the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Director in 2012 for The Big Meal, the Obie Award for Musical Theater in 2014 for Fun Home, and the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical in 2015 for Fun Home. He also received a 2016 Special Citation Obie Award for his collaboration with Annie Baker and the design team on their productions together.
Outside of theatre, Gold directed and executive produced the FX comedy series Compliance. In 2024, he was announced as the director of a new Broadway adaptation of Romeo and Juliet featuring music by Jack Antonoff.
