Review: AN EVENING WITH BRIAN STOKES MITCHELL at The 92nd Street Y Uplifted
by Gregory Fletcher - Mar 20, 2026
Mitchell sent the audience out into the night uplifted, restored, and indeed, full of hope and joy with his 3/19 show, performing a wide range of songs from his Broadway roles in RAGTIME and MAN OF LA MANCHA to contemporary works.

Review: Handel’s Unfamiliar but Fine HERCULES with The English Concert and Bicket, at Carnegie Hall
by Richard Sasanow - Mar 17, 2026
If you’re thinking of the muscle-bound hero of action films—or even Disney animation—boy, have you got the wrong HERCULES. As soon as Harry Bicket and his early music ensemble, ‘The English Concert,’ played their first notes of the overture at Carnegie Hall the other afternoon, we knew we were definitely in Handel territory.

Review: NEWSIES at The Argyle Theatre
by Sam Desmond - Feb 4, 2026
A musical forged in ambition of set, stage, and stamina, director Tommy Ranieri’s vision of a world only beginning to stand up for their rights was sprawling and spectacular. Unlike other versions of “Newsies,” Rainieri’s production had a maturity that touched the cast’s characters to truly feel they deserved better than the circumstances they were backed into.

Review: PORGY AND BESS Raises the Roof at the Metropolitan
by Richard Sasanow - Dec 8, 2025
When I read that the Met, in the program notes for James Robinson’s production of PORGY AND BESS, called it “a supremely American operatic masterpiece” I couldn’t help but think of Stephen Sondheim’s answer (perhaps apocryphal) when he was asked whether SWEENEY TODD was an opera or a musical: “If it’s done in a theatre, it’s a musical; if it’s in an opera house, it’s an opera.”
