BIO
Nathan Fillion began his career in theatre, television, and film productions in Canada, including performing with Rapid Fire Theatre and the improvised soap opera Die-Nasty. In 1994, he moved to New York City, where he joined the soap opera One Life to Live as Joey Buchanan, earning a Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series in 1996. He left the series in 1997 to pursue other projects, later returning briefly in 2007.
After relocating to Los Angeles, Fillion appeared in the sitcom Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place and played James Frederick “Minnesota” Ryan in Saving Private Ryan. His breakthrough came in 2002 when he starred as Captain Malcolm Reynolds in Firefly, a role he later reprised in Serenity. His work on Firefly earned him the Cinescape Genre Face of the Future Award and later Syfy Genre Awards recognition. Around the same time, he appeared as Caleb in the final season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Fillion also built a strong voice acting career, contributing to projects such as Jade Empire, Justice League Unlimited, and multiple animated Green Lantern films as Hal Jordan. He starred in Slither and appeared in Waitress, White Noise 2: The Light, and Lost.
In 2009, Fillion took on one of his best-known roles as Richard Castle in the ABC series Castle, which ran until 2016 and earned him a Satellite Award nomination. During this period, he also appeared in projects including Much Ado About Nothing, the podcast stage show The Thrilling Adventure Hour, and the web series Con Man, which he created with fellow Firefly actor Alan Tudyk.
Fillion became closely associated with gaming culture through his recurring role as Cayde-6 in the Destiny series and as Gunnery Sergeant Edward Buck in the Halo 3: ODST franchise. In 2018, he began starring as John Nolan in the ABC police drama The Rookie. That same year, he and director Allan Ungar released a viral live-action short based on Uncharted.
In recent years, Fillion has frequently collaborated with director James Gunn, appearing in The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. In 2025, he portrayed Guy Gardner in Superman and continued the role in the broader DC Universe, including appearances in Peacemaker and the upcoming series Lanterns. Also in 2025, Fillion launched the podcast Once We Were Spacemen with Alan Tudyk.
