Kristen Stewart

Kristen Stewart began her acting career in 1999 after being discovered by an agent during a Christmas play at her elementary school. She made her television debut with a small, nonspeaking role in the Disney Channel television film The Thirteenth Year (1999). She subsequently appeared in The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas (2000) and the independent drama The Safety of Objects (2001), playing the daughter of a troubled single mother. In 2002, she starred opposite Jodie Foster in David Fincher’s thriller Panic Room, portraying the diabetic daughter of a divorced mother. Her performance earned her a Young Artist Award nomination. She followed this with a role in the thriller Cold Creek Manor (2003), playing the daughter of characters portrayed by Dennis Quaid and Sharon Stone, and received another Young Artist Award nomination.

In 2004, Stewart had her first starring role in the children’s action comedy Catch That Kid. She also appeared in the thriller Undertow and starred as Melinda Sordino in the television film Speak, based on Laurie Halse Anderson’s novel of the same name. In 2005, she played Lisa Budwing in the fantasy adventure film Zathura: A Space Adventure. Her subsequent credits included Fierce People (2006), directed by Griffin Dunne, and the supernatural thriller The Messengers (2007), in which she played lead character Jess Solomon.

In 2007, Stewart appeared as Lucy Hardwicke in the romantic drama In the Land of Women and as teenage singer Tracy in Sean Penn’s film adaptation of Into the Wild. She also made a cameo appearance in the science fiction film Jumper and appeared in What Just Happened (2008). She starred in the independent drama The Cake Eaters, which screened at film festivals. In 2008, Stewart gained international recognition for her portrayal of Bella Swan in the romantic fantasy film Twilight, based on Stephenie Meyer’s novel. She reprised the role in The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009), alongside Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen. In 2009, she also starred opposite Jesse Eisenberg in Greg Mottola’s comedy-drama Adventureland.

Stewart continued to expand her filmography in 2010, starring in The Yellow Handkerchief, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2009 before its theatrical release, and Welcome to the Rileys, which also premiered at Sundance in 2010. She portrayed rock musician Joan Jett in the biographical film The Runaways (2010), directed by Floria Sigismondi. That year, she reprised her role as Bella Swan in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. Stewart received the BAFTA Rising Star Award in 2010.

In 2011, Stewart starred in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1. The following year, she portrayed Snow White in Snow White and the Huntsman and played Mary Lou in On the Road, an adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s novel. She concluded her portrayal of Bella Swan in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 (2012). The Twilight franchise grossed more than $3 billion worldwide. In 2012, Stewart was named the world’s highest-paid actress by Forbes.

In 2014, Stewart starred in Camp X-Ray, portraying a young soldier stationed at Guantanamo Bay. She also appeared in the music video for Jenny Lewis’ “Just One of the Guys” and the New York Times short film 9 Kisses. That year, she starred opposite Juliette Binoche in Olivier Assayas’ drama Clouds of Sils Maria, earning the César Award for Best Supporting Actress. She also appeared alongside Julianne Moore in the drama Still Alice, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2014.

Stewart starred opposite Jesse Eisenberg in the action comedy American Ultra (2015). Her other 2015 credits included Once and Forever, directed by Karl Lagerfeld, and the drama Anesthesia, released in 2016. She also starred opposite Nicholas Hoult in Drake Doremus’ science fiction romance Equals (2016). That year, she appeared in Kelly Reichardt’s Certain Women, Woody Allen’s Café Society, Olivier Assayas’ Personal Shopper and Ang Lee’s Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk. She also appeared in the official music video for the Rolling Stones’ single “Ride ’Em on Down” in 2016.

In 2016, Stewart was announced as the director of a short film for Refinery29’s ShatterBox Anthology. The resulting film, Come Swim, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2017 and marked her directorial debut. Stewart also coauthored a computer science preprint about the use of neural network techniques in the film’s production. In 2017, she hosted Saturday Night Live with musical guest Alessia Cara.

In 2018, Stewart starred opposite Chloë Sevigny in Lizzie, directed by Craig William Macneill, and appeared in the biographical film JT LeRoy alongside Laura Dern and Diane Kruger. She also appeared in the music video for Interpol’s “If You Really Love Nothing.” That year, she served on the official competition jury at the Cannes Film Festival.

Stewart portrayed actress Jean Seberg in the biographical drama Seberg (2019), directed by Benedict Andrews. She also starred in the action comedy Charlie’s Angels (2019) and the science fiction film Underwater (2020). In 2020, she wrote and directed Crickets, a short film included in the Netflix anthology Homemade, which featured work from 18 filmmakers during the COVID-19 pandemic. She also starred opposite Mackenzie Davis in the holiday romantic comedy Happiest Season (2020).

In 2021, Stewart portrayed Diana, Princess of Wales, in Pablo Larraín’s biographical drama Spencer. Her performance earned nominations for the Academy Award for Best Actress and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama. In 2022, she played an investigator in David Cronenberg’s science fiction film Crimes of the Future, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.

In 2023, Stewart served as president of the international jury for the competition section of the Berlin International Film Festival. In 2024, she starred in Rose Glass’ romantic thriller Love Lies Bleeding and Michael Angarano’s road film Sacramento.

In 2025, Stewart began filming The Wrong Girls, in which she stars, co-wrote and serves as a producer. She is also set to star in the film Flesh of the Gods. Stewart wrote and directed The Chronology of Water, an adaptation of Lidia Yuknavitch’s memoir, marking her feature directorial debut.
