New York Philharmonic Ensembles Series Continues with Three Concerts


The 36th season of the New York Philharmonic Ensembles series - chamber concerts showcasing Musicians from the New York Philharmonic performing classical and modern works they have chosen on select Sunday afternoons at Merkin Hall - will continue this spring with three concerts. Philharmonic musicians will perform works by Mendelssohn and Schubert on March 15, 2020; Vanhal, Mendelssohn, Roussel, and Mozart on April 19, 2020; and Eric Ewazen, Stravinsky, and Dvořák on May 24, 2020.

Very Young People's Concerts Continue with FORTE AND PIANO


The New York Philharmonic Very Young People's Concerts (VYPCs), for children ages three to six, will continue its 14th season Sunday, March 31, 2019, at 12:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. and Monday, April 1 at 10:30 a.m. at Merkin Hall, 129 West 67th Street. The program, titled “Forte and Piano,” is the second installment in Philharmonic Playground, the season's theme that imagines the Orchestra as a playground.

Shanghai Orchestra Academy Students To Perform With The New York Philharmonic


Five students from the Shanghai Orchestra Academy (SOA) have been selected to participate in the New York Philharmonic Global Academy Fellowship Program, a week-long immersion in the life of an orchestral musician, June 9-16, 2018. The students, who are known as Zarin Mehta Fellows, will take lessons with Philharmonic musicians and train and play alongside the Orchestra, led by James Gaffigan, at the Concerts in the Parks, Presented by Didi and Oscar Schafer. The students are Renchao Yu, violin; Kuan Liu, viola; Fangyu Huang, flute; Yanru Chiu, clarinet; and Sihong Zhao, bassoon. Auditions were held at the Shanghai Orchestra Academy in March 2018 by a panel of New York Philharmonic musicians.

Cleveland Orchestra Appoints New Bassoonist William Hestand


Music Director Franz Welser-Möst and The Cleveland Orchestra yesterday announced the appointment of a new Orchestra member. William Hestand has been appointed second bassoon. He joins the Orchestra on November 19. Mr. Hestand succeeds Phillip Austin, who joined the Orchestra in 1981 and retired in August 2011.
