It’s an imaginative musical romance that charms audiences with its original score and delightful wit. It won the 2017 Off-Broadway Alliance Award for Best New Musical and was nominated for two Lortel Awards: Outstanding Actor and Outstanding Projection Design.

As a regular theatergoer who has seen Jon Robin Baitz's Other Desert Cities before--twice in the Palm Springs area--I wasn't expecting to be surprised. Well, I was. It became more than a play; it was an experience. At rise, I found myself embraced by a set that invited me into the living room of an upscale Palm Spring home. From that moment on, I was captured by sensitive acting and masterful direction in this stunning production at Coachella Valley Repertory Theatre.

From the piano, Music Director Stephen Hulsey conducts the orchestra. We are transported to Florence, Italy, as statues come to life in Karen Sieber’s lovely, almost seductive choreography, performed by a remarkable Ensemble--leading into Adam Kersten’s lyrical production. His direction was a work of art.

The impactful way Cabaret shows the divide of a country, the hate crimes of anti-Semitism and neo-Nazi white supremacy, and the meteoric rise of one of the most brutal dictators in world history. In song and dance it is a perfect lesson of “those who forget the past tend to repeat it”.
