“It is difficult composing endings. Beethoven and Wagner could do it. Only great composers can do it. I can do it too.” It wasn’t just Richard Strauss’s death-embracing 'Four Last Songs' which fit this theme in the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra’s final Prom of the season, as Franz Schubert’s 8th symphony remained unfinished at his death - and Schubert’s setting of a morbid Goethe poem inspired Hans Werner Henze’s “Erlkönig”. The Benjamin Britten arrangement of the third movement of Gustav Mahler’s 3rd symphony (What the Wild Flowers Tell Me) does not immediately strike you as being consumed with mortality, but if you listen carefully you might find themes which go beyond the superficially pastoral. Quite a programme for this orchestra to go out on.

It takes just under ten hours to appreciate J. R. R. Tolkien’s masterpiece if you watch Peter Jackson’s epic trilogy one film after the other. For many fans, it’s a yearly occurrence to gather with friends to re-watch Frodo and his band of brothers fighting evil to save the Shire. This year you can do things differently. The Royal Albert Hall rings in the 25th anniversary of The Fellowship of the Ring with a celebration of their own, showing Jackson’s magna opera in its entirety, accompanied by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Choir, and the Trinity Boys Choir. As far as movie marathons go, you can’t beat the glamour of attending one of the most iconic franchises backed by a live orchestra in a magnificent setting like the Hall.

Although the films are marketed as the fantasy genre, they go beyond and touch on so many inherently human conditions from friendship and loyalty, to the ultimate corruption of power. I know I am looking forward to this performance more than any other this summer and I hope to see you there.
