Glenn Close began her professional stage career in 1974, appearing in productions at the Helen Hayes Theatre. She made her television debut in Great Performances (1975) and appeared in stage productions of King Lear (1975), the Broadway musical Rex (1976), The Crucifer of Blood (1978–1979), and Barnum (1980–1981).
Close made her film debut in The World According to Garp (1982), followed by The Big Chill (1983), The Natural (1984), The Stone Boy (1984), Something About Amelia (1984), The Elephant Man (1984), Maxie (1985), and Jagged Edge (1985). She also returned to Broadway in The Real Thing (1984). Her breakthrough continued with starring roles in Fatal Attraction (1987), Dangerous Liaisons (1988), Stones for Ibarra (1988), and Immediate Family (1989).
In the 1990s, Close starred in Reversal of Fortune (1990), Hamlet (1990), Hook (1991), The House of the Spirits (1993), Sarah, Plain and Tall (1991) and its sequels, Meeting Venus (1992), and Serving in Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story (1995). She joined the voice cast of The Simpsons in 1995 and hosted Saturday Night Live in 1989 and 1992. On stage, she starred as Norma Desmond in Broadway's Sunset Boulevard (1993–1994) and later appeared in Death and the Maiden (1992). Additional film credits from the decade include The Paper (1994), Mars Attacks! (1996), 101 Dalmatians (1996), Air Force One (1997), Paradise Road (1997), Tarzan (1999), and Cookie's Fortune (1999).
During the 2000s, Close shifted much of her focus to television while continuing to work in film. Her credits included 102 Dalmatians (2000), The Safety of Objects (2001), Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her (2001), South Pacific (2001), Will & Grace (2002), Pinocchio (2002), The Lion in Winter (2003), Le Divorce (2003), The Stepford Wives (2004), Hoodwinked! (2005), The Chumscrubber (2005), Nine Lives (2005), Heights (2005), The Shield (2005), Evening (2007), and the FX legal drama Damages (2007–2012), in which she starred as Patty Hewes.
Close returned to film and the stage in the 2010s with Albert Nobbs (2011), which she also co-wrote and produced. She voiced The Giant in Into the Woods (2012), appeared in The Pirates of Penzance (2014), A Delicate Balance (2014), Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), 5 to 7 (2014), Low Down (2014), Louie (2015), The Great Gilly Hopkins (2016), and The Girl with All the Gifts (2016). She reprised her role as Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard in London (2016) and on Broadway (2017). Other projects included Sea Oak (2017), What Happened to Monday (2017), The Wilde Wedding (2017), Crooked House (2017), The Wife (2018), and the Off-Broadway play Mother of the Maid (2018).
In the 2020s, Close starred in Hillbilly Elegy (2020), Four Good Days (2020), and Swan Song (2021), and served as an executive producer on Cruella (2021). She joined the second season of Tehran (2022) and appeared in The New Look (2024). Her film credits also include The Deliverance (2024), The Summer Book (2024), Brothers (2024), Back in Action (2025), Wake Up Dead Man (2025), and The Black Ball (2026). In 2026, she was honored with a Hand & Footprint Ceremony at the TCM Classic Film Festival.
Close's announced upcoming projects include the film adaptation of Sunset Boulevard, Encores, a remake of Cama adentro, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping (2026), and the Channel 4 crime drama Up to No Good.
