BIO
Angela Lansbury began her professional acting career in the early 1940s after studying at the Feagin School of Drama and Radio, graduating in 1942. She made her film debut in Gaslight (1944), earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, followed by roles in National Velvet (1944) and The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945), for which she won a Golden Globe Award and received another Academy Award nomination. During her contract with MGM from the mid-1940s to early 1950s, she appeared in films including The Harvey Girls (1946), Till the Clouds Roll By (1947), The Three Musketeers (1948), State of the Union (1948), The Red Danube (1949), and Kind Lady (1951), as well as radio and early television productions.
After leaving MGM in 1952, Lansbury worked as a freelance actress in film, television, and theater. Her film credits during this period included The Court Jester (1956), The Long Hot Summer (1958), The Reluctant Debutante (1958), and The Dark at the Top of the Stairs (1960). She appeared on Broadway in Hotel Paradiso (1957) and A Taste of Honey (early 1960s), while continuing television work. In 1962, she starred in The Manchurian Candidate, earning her third Academy Award nomination. Additional film appearances included All Fall Down (1962), The World of Henry Orient (1964), and Dear Heart (1964).
Lansbury achieved major stage success starring in the Broadway musical Mame (1966), winning the Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical. She followed this with Dear World (1969), earning a second Tony Award, and appeared in films such as Something for Everyone (1970) and Disney’s Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971). In the 1970s, she starred in stage productions including Gypsy (1973–1975), which earned her a third Tony Award, and The King and I (1978). Her film work included Death on the Nile (1978), for which she received the National Board of Review Award for Best Supporting Actress.
In 1979, Lansbury starred in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street on Broadway, winning her fourth Tony Award. She continued film and television work with projects including The Lady Vanishes (1979), The Mirror Crack’d (1980), The Last Unicorn (1982), The Pirates of Penzance (1983), and television films such as Little Gloria... Happy at Last (1982) and A Talent for Murder (1984).
From 1984 to 1996, Lansbury starred as Jessica Fletcher in the television series Murder, She Wrote, later reprising the role in television films including South by Southwest (1997), A Story to Die For (2000), The Last Free Man (2001), and The Celtic Riddle (2003). During this period, she also appeared in projects such as Rage of Angels: The Story Continues (1986), The Shell Seekers (1989), Mrs. Santa Claus (1996), and voiced Mrs. Potts in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (1991) and the Empress Dowager in Anastasia (1997).
In later years, Lansbury continued working in film, television, and theater. She appeared in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (2005), the film Nanny McPhee (2005), and returned to Broadway in Deuce (2007), earning a Tony nomination. She won her fifth Tony Award for Blithe Spirit (2009) and received another nomination for A Little Night Music (2009–2010). Her later screen work included Mr. Popper’s Penguins (2011), the miniseries Little Women (2017), Mary Poppins Returns (2018), The Grinch (2018), and her final film appearance in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022).
Lansbury died in her sleep at her home in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles on October 11, 2022, at the age of 96.
