Andrew Lloyd Webber began his career in musical theatre in the 1960s, partnering with lyricist Tim Rice. Their early works included The Likes of Us (1965), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1968; expanded into a full-length stage musical in 1972), Jesus Christ Superstar (1970), and Evita (1978). He also collaborated with Alan Ayckbourn on Jeeves (1975), later revised as By Jeeves (1996).
During the late 1970s and 1980s, Lloyd Webber composed Variations (1978), the Requiem (1985), and Cricket (1986). His stage musicals Cats (1981), Starlight Express (1984), The Phantom of the Opera (1986), and Aspects of Love (1989) became major international productions, with Cats and The Phantom of the Opera achieving record-breaking runs in London and on Broadway.
In the 1990s, Lloyd Webber composed Sunset Boulevard (1993), which won seven Tony Awards following its Broadway premiere, and released a filmed version of Cats (1998). He also wrote Whistle Down the Wind (1998) and The Beautiful Game (2000), and composed "Amigos Para Siempre" for the 1992 Summer Olympics.
In the 2000s, Lloyd Webber expanded his work as a producer, overseeing productions including Bombay Dreams (2002), The Woman in White (2004), and a West End revival of The Sound of Music (2006). He also served as a judge on BBC talent series including How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? (2006), Any Dream Will Do (2007), and I'd Do Anything (2008), appeared as a mentor on American Idol (2008), managed the United Kingdom's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest (2009), and premiered the sequel to The Phantom of the Opera, Love Never Dies (2010).
Lloyd Webber continued composing and producing in the 2010s with The Wizard of Oz (2011), Stephen Ward the Musical (2013), School of Rock (2015), and the Broadway transfer of the acclaimed Sunset Boulevard revival (2017). His memoir Unmasked was published in 2018. He also co-wrote the song "Beautiful Ghosts" with Taylor Swift for the 2019 film adaptation of Cats. In 2018, he achieved EGOT status after winning an Emmy Award for Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.
His recent work includes Bad Cinderella (2021), which premiered in London's West End, the anthem "Make a Joyful Noise" for the 2023 coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, the announcement of a musical adaptation of The Illusionist (2024), and a reunion with Tim Rice to write original songs for Sherlock Holmes and The 12 Days of Christmas (2025). Cats: The Jellicle Ball is currently playing on Broadwya.
