Alyssa Milano began her professional career as a child performer, joining the national touring company of Annie at age seven. She subsequently appeared in commercials and Off-Broadway productions, including the first American musical adaptation of Jane Eyre. Her film debut came in Old Enough (1984), and she rose to prominence as Samantha Micelli in the ABC sitcom Who’s the Boss? (1984–1992). During this period, she also appeared in films including Commando (1985), The Canterville Ghost (1986), Crash Course (1988), and Dance ’til Dawn (1988).
Throughout the 1990s, Milano expanded into film, television, and theater. Her screen credits included Where the Day Takes You (1992), Casualties of Love: The "Long Island Lolita" Story (1993), Embrace of the Vampire (1995), Deadly Sins (1995), Poison Ivy II: Lily (1996), Fear (1996), Hugo Pool (1997), and The Webbers (1993). She also appeared on Melrose Place (1997–1998) and starred as Phoebe Halliwell in Charmed (1998–2006), later serving as a producer on the series. Her stage work included Tender Offer, All Night Long, Jane Eyre, and a Los Angeles production of Butterflies Are Free (1991–1992).
In the 2000s, Milano appeared in advertising campaigns for MCI, Veet, and Sheer Cover, and guest-starred on My Name Is Earl (2007). She voiced Dr. Ilyssa Selwyn in Ghostbusters: The Video Game (2009), starred in Romantically Challenged (2010), produced and starred in the television films Wisegal (2008) and Sundays at Tiffany’s (2010), and appeared as a sports correspondent during Major League Baseball playoff coverage. During this period, she also launched her Touch apparel brand for female sports fans.
Milano appeared in the films Hall Pass (2011) and New Year’s Eve (2011) before starring as Savannah Davis in the ABC drama Mistresses (2013–2014). In 2013, she created the comic book series Hacktivist, which was published in digital and print formats through 2014. She later hosted and judged Project Runway: All Stars, served as a guest host on The Talk (2015), and became a brand ambassador for Sprout (2015).
Her more recent acting credits include Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later (2017), Insatiable (2018), Tempting Fate (2018), The Now (2020), and the Netflix film Brazen (2022). In 2019, she launched the podcast Alyssa Milano: Sorry Not Sorry and published the children's book Hope: Project Middle School Book with Debbie Rigaud. She released the essay collection Sorry Not Sorry in 2021 and signed production deals with A&E Studios and United Talent Agency that same year.
In 2024, Milano returned to Broadway, starring as Roxie Hart in Chicago.
