BREAKDOWN

EMPIRE THE MUSICAL

As we start rehearsal very soon, we are hoping to make many hires from these auditions! So please take a good look at the vocal range and dance requirements for each character and identify a role that you are suited for.

SYNOPSIS: EMPIRE is an epic musical about the dreamers and doers who changed the world forever when they built the Empire State Building. Fresh & original, Empire has uplifting melodies, energizing dance numbers, daring spectacle, and a compelling story that celebrates the purpose driven life of those with the guts to choose hope, every day. It takes place in both 1976 and in the 1930’s.

PLEASE NOTE: Equity role determinations have not yet been made so it is possible some of these roles may later be designated as Chorus roles.

SEEKING:

Frances Belle “Wally” Wolodsky: 40s-50s, any ethnicity, Broadway belter, some dance required, (alto/belt G3-E5 strong belt to D) A go get ‘em, can-do, behind the scenes gal. Educated, hard-working, she’s as comfortable with the blue-collar boys as she is in the boardroom. She’s Al Smith’s right-hand and a little in love with Charles Kinney, to whom she was once engaged. Sturdy, strong, powerful, attractive, engaging, good-humored, only doubts herself in that she’s a woman in a man’s world, but mostly knows she really runs the show.

Governor Alfred E. “Al” Smith: 40s-60s, Irish-Italian-Catholic, Vaudevillian vocals, some dance required, (bari/tenor - A3-Ab5) Based on an historical figure, he’s considered the crown prince of NYC, beloved by all. Raised in a tenement on the lower east side, all he wanted to be was a song and dance man, but ended up in politics. Charismatic, endearing, aware, insightful, as-NYC-as-can-be accent. Bowler/Derby hat wearing, cigar smoking kinda guy. Also, a husband and father of five.

Sylvie Lee: 45, half-Mohawk-half-Polish, strong contemporary and Broadway belter, some dance required, (alto - G3-D5). Sylvie exists in the 1976 timeline and imagines her way into the 1930’s. A reporter for a NYC paper, she’s a woman of the '70s who is investigating the construction of the Empire State Building. Earnest, a little bit angry about injustice and on a mission to change the past, or at least, her view of it. Her journalistic ability to investigate and interview those who came before allows her to journey deep into the past to recreate reality for herself, and us. She opens up during her journey, as the past opens up to her.

Charles Kinney: 40s-50s, any ethnicity, some dance required, (bari/tenor - C4-G5) From a wealthy family, flamboyant and fun, Charles is as endearing as he is exasperating. One of the top architects for one of the top architectural firms in NYC, he takes up a lot of space when he enters a room. Artistic, arrogant, romantic and still deeply in love with Wally. In his heart he's a man of the people and he is willing to roll up his sleeves when he needs to.

John J. Raskob/Abe Klayman: 40s-60s, any ethnicity, traditional Broadway vocals/strong dancer, (bass/bari - A3-F5) Raskob, based on an historical figure who helped build DuPont and General Motors and created mutual funds, is a political animal and a real power player. Klayman is the site foreman who is smart, capable, no nonsense, and cares deeply for his men.

Rudy Duryea/Skye: 20s, Mohawk, Kahnawake/French Canadian, traditional Broadway belt/ballad, strong dancer, (alto/belt - G3-E5) Rudy (1930’s timeline) disguises herself as a man to work on the building with her cousin Jesse as a Mohawk Skywalker. Passionate and brave, she dares to dream big and love big. Skye (1976 timeline) is Sylvie’s daughter. She’s very modern and much more easy-going than her mother, though she too is a dreamer.

Ethan O’Dowd: 20s-30s, Irish immigrant, Broadway vocals/strong dancer, (Irish tenor - D4-A5) Ethan is the leader on a Rivet Gang, helping to build the Empire State Building. Husband and father. Confident, extremely likeable, he does this work in order to support his family. Emily & he are childhood sweethearts from Killarney, a small town in Count Kerry Ireland. He’s torn between his dreams and his responsibilities.

Janet Arthur/Hazel: 40s–60s, any ethnicity, traditional Broadway vocals/strong dancer, (alto G3-E5) Mrs. Arthur is an established, wealthy, self-righteous, woman of purpose and opinions. She likes a winner and she likes her life exactly as it is. Hazel is a secretary on Wally’s team. Committed to Wally and ready for any task.

Understudy #1: Female, 40s, any ethnicity, Broadway belter, (alto/belt G3-E5 strong belt to D), strong mover. To cover Wally and Janet Arthur/Hazel.

Understudy #2: Female, 30s, Mohawk, Kahnawake/French Canadian, traditional Broadway belt/ballad, strong dancer, (alto/belt - G3-E5). To cover Sylvie and Rudy/Sky.

Understudy #3: Male, 40s, any ethnicity, bari/tenor, strong dancer. To cover Charles Kinney, Al Smith, and Raskob/Klayman.
