[LOUIS ARMSTRONG] CAST -

SEEKING

UNDERSTUDY POSSIBILITIES. 30s-40s, male identifying, Black. American Icon and International Music Legend. The father of Jazz. Born in the most impoverished and violent part of New Orleans at the beginning of the 20th Century, his mother was a prostitute, and he never knew his father. He grew up hiding under the pianos in the brothels of Storyville. He has huge charisma, warmth and wit and lived only for his music and blowing his horn. His music was the child he was always longing for.

[DAISY PARKER] 20s, female-identifying, Black. Louis’ first wife. A knife wielding prostitute in Storyville, New Orleans. Fierce, earthy, funny. And very sexual. On the edge. Her toughness and violence conceal her vulnerability.

[LIL HARDIN] 25-30, female-identifying, Black. Louis’ second wife. College educated classical musician. Now a jazz pianist in Chicago. Way ahead of her time. Sharp, controlling, elegant. She transfers her own ambitions onto Louis, and grooms him into the icon the World became to know.

[ALPHA SMITH] 35, female-identifying, Black. Louis’ third wife. A former maid who dreams of luxury, lovely things and family. Her dreams seem to be coming true when she moves with Louis to Hollywood. However, the harsh realities of Louis’s tour life and career challenges start to conflict with Alpha’s idea of a picture perfect marriage.

[LUCILLE WILSON] 40s, female-identifying, Black. Louis’ fourth wife. A former showgirl at the Cotton Club, who sees in Louis his real need for a ‘Home’ A strong, centered, and magnificent woman who finally gives Louis a loving base. She nurtures him in the way he so badly needs but has never experienced.

[KING JOE OLIVER] 20s – 30s, male-identifying, Black. Legendary bandleader and trumpeter. Louis’ musical mentor and Father figure. Macho and charismatic. NOTE: Trumpet playing is a plus.

[JOE GLASER] 35 -50 male-identifying, white. Louis’ feared and unprincipled agent. A tough, Mafia underling, who fought his way up to be the most famous Music Agent in the world. Jewish. (Additionally, doubles as WHITE FATHER, a plantation owner)

UNDERSTUDIES 20s – 30s, male-identifying, Black. Famous vaudeville performer. The first black artist to become a wealthy Movie Star. Great tapper.
