The Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry at the University of Connecticut will present the grand opening of Opera and Giant Puppets: Amy Trompetter's "Barber of Seville" on Saturday, June 14 at 4 p.m. at the Ballard Institute's new home in Storrs Center. The grand opening includes a special free performance of The Punch Opera by Amy Trompetter's Redwing Blackbird Theater at 5 p.m.

Amy Trompetter's spectacular display of giant, life-size, and miniature figures, which reveals the stunning potential of puppets and opera, was performed to great acclaim in New York City and Vienna from 1983 into the 21st century. This exhibition reveals not only Trompetter's vivid sculptural and performance style, but also her dynamic and unconventional approach to the classic opera, an interpretation that both supports and transgresses the original. Opera and Giant Puppets: Amy Trompetter's "Barber of Seville" will be on display at the Ballard Institute through October 12, 2014.

Also on exhibit at the Ballard Institute is The World of Puppetry: From the Collections of the Ballard Institute, an exhibition of over fifty puppets celebrating the magnificent variety of global traditions from Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas represented in the Ballard Institute's permanent collections.

The new Ballard Institute at Storrs Center is open Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
