Julie Taymor's Grendel

Not sure if this should be OT or not but ......

Single tickets went on sale today for Julie Taymor and Elliott Goldenthal's new opera "Grendel" which will play four performances at the Lincoln Center Festival in July. The reviews in LA and San Francisco were mostly raves, especially for Taymor's dazzling-looking physical production. If you're interested, tickets are going fast:

Thanks for posting this, Margo! Of course, it should come as no surprise to you that not a single soul responded to it on this board. 'Til now, that is. :)

I've heard about this opera for the longest time from reading bios and stories of either Ms. Taymor or Mr. Goldenthal, and I'm excited to finally see it at Lincoln Center. I admire Julie Taymor and Eliot Goldenthal for their creative genius and thank and congratulate the LA Opera and Lincoln Center for supporting this work of theater art.

Here's a link to more production photos from the LA Opera website:

WOW! Those photos are amazing. Not sure why there's so little interest for a truly dazzling-looking and fascinating-sounding show from a genius like Julie Taymor, but whatever. I got a very decent orchestra seat, so I can't wait.

Margo,

Thank you for the info!

I have a dear friend who was fortunate enough to see its world premiere a couple of weeks ago in LA. She found it to be stunning. I wish I could get to Lincoln Center to see it on this coast, but it's just not going to happen.

Enjoy it and please post a review aftwards, I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.

That looks absolutely fantastic. Julie Taymor is a genius. If only she came back to Boston Children's Theatre. Then we would do good shows again. Okay I'm done.

For those interested in getting both sides of the story, the Lincoln Center Festival is also putting on four performances of Benjamin Bagby's one-man show, Beowulf, on July 18, 19, 21 and 22, at the LaGuardia Drama Theater on 65th and Amsterdam.

"Breakfast with the Arts" did a segment on Sunday on the opera and interviewed both Taymor and the composer Goldenthal. They showed clips of the opera and it looks amazing visually. My favorite clip was Denyce Graves' introduction. She is costumed as an over the top DIVA and as the dragon's huge mouth opens she slowly slithers out as part of his bright red tongue. It looks just wonderful.

Now, if it said "Disney presents Julie Taymor's Grendel" then this thread would be hoppin'.

I really liked the novel when I read it a couple years ago, I had heard about this production, but being that I'm a poor guy in Kentucky, there'd be now way I could get out to California to see it.

This looks beautiful. I wonder if the music is as interesting and beautiful as the visual? Or if it's another Lion King.

I just got two $40.00 tickets for it. I have no clue where the seats are... but this whole thing looks pretty damn cool. I hope it's being taped.

I'm sorry, but it looks horrible. Typical, weird Julie Taymor. Looks like she just altered 'The Lion King'. One can advance artistically within their own niche...

JRTO, please. Those pictures look NOTHING like Lion King.

What is the opera about? Is it an American opera?
