With a record setting 13 Tony nominations, Stereophonic put a dent in most of the play categories and some of the musical ones as well. (Deservedly so)

Had they not transferred, I’m curious to think who would’ve been the alternative nominations to fill their slots. I’m mostly thinking about the Featured Actor/Actress, Score and Orchestrations category.

For F. Actor, I would’ve definitely thought Will Keen (Patriots) and Michael Esper (Appropriate) would’ve made the cut.

For F. Actress, I would’ve placed Francis Benhamou (Prayers…)

For Score and Orchestrations, probably The Notebook

I'd add Michael Imperioli for a potential Featured Actor nomination. It's a big scene chewy role. And since Stereophonic has 3 men in the category, I think Imperioli, Keen, and Esper would be next in line to take their spots.

I was shocked that Francis Benhamou was omitted from featured actress. That monologue was crazy. As for the second woman here, I think perhaps Natalie Gold (Appropriate) or Zenzi Williams (Jaja's) would have made the cut.

And I think you're right about The Notebook replacing it in score and orchestrations.

It's interesting to think about what play would be the frontrunner in Best Play without Stereophonic there. They clearly loved Jaja's African Hair Braiding, but it's been closed for a long time. Which means maybe Mary Jane would have a shot at winning.

Jaja or Mary Jane would probably be Play frontrunners.

The lack of Best Score nomination for Water for Elephants is pretty glaring considering it got 7 total nominations. I wager it would get into that category before Notebook. And Orchestrations are usually tied to Score.

Now this has made me look towards possible winners...Best Director of a play feels like a dead heat between Daniel Aukin and Lila N and we won't know until Tony night which way the wind blows.

I'm surprised but Appropriate seems to have lost a little steam with its transfer to the Belasco. I'd be surprised if it upset director, but I suppose anything could happen.

I completely forgot about Imperioli and that’s sad because he did leave an impression on me.

If anything, the transfer keeps it in the conversation and allows for more people to see it who missed it at 2ST. It’s not like TAKE ME OUT, which lost a LOT of momentum after transferring 6 months later.

I don't think Appropriate has lost any steam. Sure, its grosses are lower, but its main press and buzz blitz occurred in December through March, prior to some new shows opening.

Play Revival seems pretty safe, and Actress and Director seem like close races between McAdams and Aukin. Maybe it wins Lighting, too, but that feels like the ceiling for wins. Though Feat Actor is kind of a tossup right now.

The widely held belief also seems to be that Lila's direction really elevated this play.

Michael Esper is so much better than any of the Stereophonic nominees, but that's just me.

I feel bad for Imperioli. He didn’t get a single nod this season. Though I guess there’s still time for him to be a Theatre World honoree.
