"Emmy®, Tony® and Grammy® Award winner Cynthia Nixon returns to The New Group in this world premiere production!

Naphtali’s mother, a world-famous performance artist, disappeared suddenly seven years ago. And yet, he sees her everywhere: in the faces of friends, coworkers, the guy he’s flirting with in a dark bar. When his mother returns with few answers and a staggering request, Naphtali is forced to confront what he’s spent years trying to forget.

Art imitates life and consumes it entirely in this funny, deeply human mystery about mothers and sons, coming of age, and coming apart.

Taylor Trensch (Camelot) joins Cynthia Nixon (And Just Like That…) in this world premiere from Jordan Seavey. Directed by Scott Elliott."

I really really loved this. Having no clue what it was about other than “an artist disappears for 7 years”, this was a fascinating look at performance art mixing with politics, AIDS, queerness and more. I really don’t want to give anything away about this but I could see how uncomfortable it made some of the older ladies in the audience which usually means that’s something I’ll love. I’ll be thinking about this one for quite a while.

How was Taylor? I know him as an acquaintance and try to see him whenever he is in a show. I just love him.  I won't get to see this as I will not be back in town before it closes. It would be nice if it got a transfer for next season so I can see it.

This is the best acting Trensch has ever done.

Well now I will just go curl up in a corner and cry!!  lol  The one show I missed him in, and am so upset I couldn't get in to see him, was "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time". I saw it before he took over the role.

OH. Ok to be fair to him, I actually didn’t see him in that - completely forgot he took over.

That’s saying something. Did you see him in Curious Incident?  One of the most amazing performances I’ve ever seen.

This play was fantastic. Considering it is a show about performance art and the relationships artists have, the “performance art” staging style made the meta narrative work so well. Cynthia was pretty good (especially as the

) but I agree Taylor Trench runs away with this one. Considering he is the one who gets the emotional arc, you come away thinking less about Miriam’s greatness and more about Naphtali’s yearning for emotional connection. Some of the queer elements felt a little forced regarding the greater messaging of the piece, but they definitely showed a distinct upfront style of the playwright, Jordan Seavey.

Honestly, Miriam was reminding me a little bit of Lydia Tar in such a juicy way. Workaholic to a point of destroying those close to her and around her.
